I saw a video some time back (which I can't find now) where someone used an MFT top as a template to drill holes for a workbench he was building.  I'd like to do this using my MFT top and OF1400.  My question, what router bit should I use?

Unless you're planning on using Qwas dogs to set up rails and cut perfect 90 degree cuts, just drill 3/4" or 13/16" holes wherever you need them for clamps.  If you don't get the hole pattern absolutely, perfectly square, having 20mm holes at 96mm centers is worthless.

I recently did something similar for something that I will eventually post here. Once I finish it.  Just clamped that puppy to the bottom of the mft, used a 20mm bradpoint bit thru the mft holes to mark the centers, removed the "puppy" and then went to town drilling the holes.

McGyver and Goldie Hawn (my canine kids) were not harmed in this process. [thumbs up]

One option is to buy a 13/16" (0.8125") router bit (Amana is one source) and have your favorite resharpening shop grind it down to precisely 20mm (0.787402").

I seem to remember that in the original thread that the author had a problem when the template MFT top moved during the copying process.

I have produced a copy of my top. Start by clamping everything very tight and then put a hole through at each corner. Then put in 4 dogs to keep registration whilst you cut the rest.

Thanks all for the reply's.  I'm going to give this a shot.  We'll see how it goes.

The Amana 45444 13/16 bit it $24 on Amazon.com.  I have a hard time justifying $187 [scared] for a router bit.
