Useful Tips for Hiding Festool (or other) Purchases from Significant Others

I have a few stories I might share if I get my courage up, but until that happens, I'd like to hear yours. We ALL have SO much to learn. Imagine the collective ability from everyone on this discussion board. The cumulative experience of hiding purchases could open up the floodgates of possibility for all us losers who are too transparent and can't hide a purchase without squealing on ourselves. Give us your best strategies....

Sysports with empty drawers offer an easy way to have something come in and just inconspicuously slide it into storage.

As long as I am making things for my wife or two grown kids, I have not had much pushback on tools!

One benefit of brick and mortar sales....you can hide them in the trunk of your car until the dark of night and then slip them into your workshop.

Another avenue that dried up was the Amazon delivery lock boxes.  That was a good alternative to front porch delivery.

Mine stories are always the same and very simple, I tell her what it is, how much it cost and when to expect it. She needs to know because our UPS driver puts things in the garage and leaves a note for what he’s put away. Don’t want her shooting poor Curt because she got startled by the noise in the garage.

This approach has always been the way I’ve done it. She must be ok with it, she’s stuck around for 40 years of marriage and 2 years of dating. The early car years were fun, the look on her face when 2 fittings ran $750.00 was priceless.

Dont forget the "Its not new, I had this for a long time"

I have tried this (not on Festool) and it really works (because both our memory abilities are going down as we age. And I suppose my wife has used the same "technique" on me, too).

separate checking accounts, neither one knows/cares how much the “extras” cost, as long as everything else is taken care of....

What a trouble maker Dave...

“What this ? You’ve seen this...it’s what I used to make that jewelry box for you last Xmas...and what’s going help with the daughters new house projects

*My worry is...when I’m gone she sells my tools for what I told her they cost.

My local Woodcraft is very near the various supermarkets we use. So when I do the shopping, I make sure to take my car and not hers. Then it's simple to make a quick detour to Woodcraft and hide, I mean store, stuff in my trunk. I wake up an hour before everyone else in the mornings, so it's easy to bring my illicit goods into the house under the cover of darkness. In to the basement it goes and no one is the wiser.  [wink]

The truth is that I've been married for 38 years (I'm 58--we started early). And she's used to my ways and just smiles. I screwed myself, one time, though. I ordered this luxurious bandsaw from Italy (a Felder, years ago). I thought I struck gold when the delivery was scheduled when Julie was gone for the day. I figured I'd get it in the garage and no one would notice.

Unfortunately, the truck dropped it off and pulled away. That was when I realized that when I got it off the pallet, it was STILL too tall to slide into the garage. So it was still sitting there when she got home. :)

I'm going to assume that this thread is somewhat in jest because I can't imagine hiding lots of purchases from my spouse, let alone sharing tips on how to do so.

In that spirit: how about just counting her shoes from time to time? Fight fire with fire!

Yes, it's in jest. Just thought it might be fun. The fellow up above who called it pathetic didn't get the sense of humor.

I used to hide some of my Festool purchases from the wife, but eventually the guilt built up to the point where I quit doing it.  She eventually saw them all anyway when we were building our new house and she was out in the shop helping build the cabinets and trim.  She saw the value and now doesn't say anything (well, not much) when a new systainer or something else arrives.

I've now tried a different approach:  I will watch a Youtube review of a tool I would like while she is in the room- she'll say something like "that's really cool, do you have that yet?"  When I say no, and if she follows up with "you should get that" , then that's my green light!!  That worked recently with the GRS-16 rail square from [member=61691]TSO_Products[/member] via Bob Marino.  Sometimes I do get the 'eye-roll' though.

I do owe her a new dining room table and mission-style bed frame- after putting up with me for 34 years of marriage (this June) I guess she deserves them!

Regards,
Gerald

This whole topic is pathetic.
Seriously. I would never hide my purchases from anyone. I spend my money on whatever the heck I want. And that has been established from day one.

My LOML can't say jack.  She gets lot's of stuff that comes in every week from Amazon, Nordies, Neimans, etc.  I almost have free reign!  Almost, that is...  [wink]
