Veneer question

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I haven't used veneer before and I'm hoping to use it on a night stand build. My question is actually more about wood movement. My plan is to use baltic birch substrate for the walls / top / bottom, with the outside faces veneered, and the front ply edges banded with white oak hardwood. I would like this edge banding hardwood to be about 3/4"-1" deep, though, because I want to rabbet out a recess where the inset drawer face will go.

My question is, will it work to have a 1" board glued to the edge of the plywood, and then glue veneer over that? Or does that post a risk for the edge band board expanding and contracting and disrupting the veneer? I haven't done a done many hardwood projects and none where a veneer has been applied over the top and not sure what's possible.

The veneer product I'm considering is something like this:

Thanks!
