I see references to the 500 Q, 500EQ. AND 500 Plus. I can't find this reference on Festool USA.  Are these identical tools? I'm wondering if the different designations are packages?

[member=9212]Cincinnati[/member], welcome to the forum.

There is only one version of the Domino 500 machine in the U.S. It's commonly just called the DF 500, although technically it's the DF 500 Q. There is no EQ. And the Plus is likely a nomenclature you're seeing on a European website to denote what we call the "SET" version in the U.S., which includes the optional trim and cross stops.

So, basically, the options are non-set (machine only) and set (machine + trim and cross stops).

Hope that helps.

Welcome!

Are you in Cincy by chance?  If so, local (East side) here. I have a 700 but use it like a 500!!

One other note... if you are looking at used ones, there are some that have pins and some that have little plastic paddles. If you are looking new, they are all paddles.

Cheers. Bryan.

Bryan. Left Cincy in 1982 - a lifetime ago. Thanks for the info.

I'll google using a 700 like a 500.  I'm interested in doing some larger work (beds and doors) but mostly do face frames, etc. I'd like both, but all my interests exceed my budget. I do enjoy using fine quality tools.

I believe there are 2 versions. the earlier one that  had  alignment pins for spacing the domino hole sand the current model that uses flaps for domino spacing.

There was initially a Pin style.  It didn't last long and they changed them to the current tab style.

I was torn at the time when buying mine as I could stil get the pin style, but opted for the newer tab style.  I'm glad I did.  Imo, the pin style was a mistake being corrected.

If I recall correctly the move from the "pins" to the "paddles" was a result of a threatened or actual lawsuit brought by Mafel for infringing upon their use of positioning pins in their DD40P, Duo-dowel System.

  Correct, in all the years that the Domino has been around, there was only the change from pin style to the paddle style. All other functions are identical.

The pins is a better system as it allows infinite adjustment for calibration while the flap system only gives a couple of fixed guesses by replacing the flap (or fine adjustment if you sand the flap down).

Cheers. Bryan.
