Initially, the 2Tb WD Caviar Green will be used as primary backup for nightly (or more often) backups, with recurring backups over my LAN to a small file server.   The "Removable Archive" disk will be used to archive off old content.  When the disk is full, I will remove it, pop it into a plastic case, and move it to a safe place.   Using the archived content is as simple as popping it into the drive holder and closing the door.
In the future, I may add in a hardware Raid card (maybe an Areca), add more disks,  and create a Raid 3 array.

Dan.

Hi Dan, another option to consider is what I have done is to go for an external array, I have a Thecus N5200PRO which supports iSCSI (SCSI over gigabit ethernet) and the performance is pretty fast. You are right with respect to long term archiving, physical HDDs now aren't much more than tape media, plus more reliable.
Matt,

I thought about external, but there's not much spare room in my office.  The other issue is that I have a very large Lian Li server case for my workstation.  It has 12 internal 3.5" drive bays, 1 external 3.5" drive bay, and 7 external 5.25" drive bays.   It have lots of space for disk drives and the cooling is excellent.   So it's more cost-effective for me to use internal drives.

Regards,

Dan.

My suggestion:  I bought a 60gb sony 3 years ago.  It was too much money and I thought a 30gb was not enough.
I bought it because we had a 1 year old and I thought, hey it would be cool to have.

Well fast forward 3 years and I more times than not forget where that camcorder went to.

It gets minimal use and I am kind of sad about that.

Just telling what happened when I bought one.

Dan,

Excellent video/audio describing the stiction problem when setting the angle of a mitre saw.  I hope that Roger S., Dan C., and Wayne have started a thread dedicated to solutions to the stiction issue.  Fitment of a microadjust mechanism (such as that from Kreg) between the main arm that you swing to set the angle and the locking mechanism that grips the table base would provide the solution.  I don't own any of the CMS saws described so I cannot offer any more detailed suggestions.

To all,

An excellent discussion thread regarding video/editing.  it's way above my knowledge and abilities, though -- I'm still working on the basics of uploading decent still photos into FOG.
