I know there are many options for maintaining jointer and planer and table saw table surfaces.  For my planer, I was advised today by the factory rep to pay some attention to my planer table surface to get a smoother feed.

In particular, I was advised to clean with lacquer thinner, then apply wax (eg. Renaissance) using a red scotch bite pad with my rotary sander.  I do not see that festool has that, but does have polishing abrasives.  I have used them while doing maloof finishes on wood projects, but not this application.

Has anyone done this for machinery maintenance?  Any particular pad?  Thanks

[member=71926]martin felder[/member]  I typically just use a rag to apply wax to machine surfaces of my planer, table saw, drill press table and lathe bed, but maybe once a year I will clean up the cast iron of the table saw with aGreen vlies pad on the Rotex.

Festool does make the red vlies for hand sanding purposes.  For the rotary sanders, the color is gray, but it comes in a range of different grits.

I use the maroon Scotch brite pads. They stick well enough for this purpose by them selves if you’re careful around the miter slot. Sometimes I don’t bother to make them round.

Been using the same can of Butcher’s bowling alley paste wax for decades. I like it better than any of the much more costly sprays I’ve tried.

I e used the vlies on my saw and jointer when then developed light rust. The. Polished with Johnson’s paste wax.

Your Felder dealer should have a product called Silbergleit (spelling possibly butchered). It is a wax specifically blended for machinery maintenance. It is a truly amazing product. I sold it for years under the name Kity Speed.

I use an old PC 4.5" x 4.5" sander dedicated to cleaning rust and such, keep it in a cheap plastic toolbox along with all the conditioning pad grits.  Before I started keeping low heat in my shop I would heat the surfaces with a heat gun, rub pieces of my wifes discarded large candles and then buff with the fine grey conditioning pads.  Those barrel style candles are very hard wax.

I would have to have actual low level rust to break out a Vlies Pad for a cast iron machine section.  Otherwise, it's Boeshield and a paper towel or cotten rag for me.  Faster than Paste Wax and it just works for me in my Basement shop where I know the humidity level is higher than it should be...

I use Briwax with either a green or white Scotchpad. This is to clean and lube the cast iron surfaces. I’ve never had rust so don’t need the coarser Scotchpads. Cast iron isn’t all all that hard and a very coarse pad on a sander could do some harm.
