Wall Hanging Plane Tray

I recently made a wall hanging plane tray to store my hand planes.  The planes simply slide in and when I drop them down, they hook under the top bracket to hang safely there.  To remove, I simply lift them and take them out again.  The back is pine shutterply and the brackets are from African Rosewood .  the brackets are lined with suede leather to protect the paint / japanning.

Nice work - and I see you're planning ahead too....a few empty slots on the rack.... [smile]

Cheers -

Rob

Thanks Rob,

The planes for those empty slots are already in the cupboard - they just need to be restored before they get added to the tray.  ;)

Nice work.  Are the brackets screwed in the from the back?

Jip, they are screwed in from the back.  Even the strips between the planes are held in place only with friction and short pieces of double sided tape (they fit quite snugly) - this way, should I one day decide to build a tool cabinet from nice wood, I can take it all apart and re-use it.

Nice call on the suede lining [member=37464]carrera4s[/member] I have my nos. 7 and 8 hung in my tool cabinet exactly like that as well to maximize efficient use of space, but I would like to redo the brackets using your lining idea to decrease the possibility of wear over time from popping them back in and out.  What adhesive did you use to apply the lining?

Hi Ear3,

I used contact cement.  You can also use hide glue - according to one YouTube video I saw the hide glue actually performed better (that was in a tail vice application).
