Hi, I am getting ready to install interior trim. It will be stained hemlock (base and window/door casings) and I want to put on the final clear finish after it is all installed. I will be using an HVLP turbine unit. I have sprayed endurovar and loved it but can't get locally now.  I was wondering what water base clear finishes have you had used that you would recommend.

Thanks,
Heather

it's a special order through sherwin williams.  I second KemAqua Plus it's top notch

I have been using Kem aqua for 15 years it's a great product. I have only learned about the plus recently but will be giving it a try as soon as my bucket is empty.

KA+ also. It is waterborne not water based. You don't want water based.

After our last discussion on KA, I looked up KA+ but I can't figure out what the difference between the two are.

My experience with KA is that it holds up under use (table top) very well.

Tom,
I'm not understanding what the terms mean.  Can you explain the differences and why one is better than the other?

Thanks, Mike A.

Highly recommend Sherwin Williams Wood Classics Satin

Thanks, I was at Sherwin Williams yesterday and bought the "minwax Oil Modified Waterbased Poly" but will see if I can exchange it. They didn't mention the Kem Aqua but I know it is geared toward professionals so I hope they have it behind the counter.  I loved the general finishes enduvar but shipping it is crazy expensive.

I haven't been having great success with the water base stain (General finishes).  I started with 2 coats of charles neil blotch control. The stain starts to dry so quickly that I can barley get it on and off of one stick of molding in time.  I even have some extender added. It is coming out OK but is a race to get it off in time.

KA+ has UV stabilizers and is self sealing. You do not need the KA sanding sealer with the +.  With windows in a kitchen the UV protection should allow for a longer lasting finish.

The + will act really wired over the sanding sealer.

There is also KA Surfacer, very nice for grain filling. Goes on 8 mills wet.

Water base will redesolve in water. Think Tempra Paints and water based stains.

Waterborne is a solvent that uses water as its carrier. Water is the agent that evaporates out, as it does so it activates the curing agents. That's how they get the Low VOC.

Every product listed above will work very well. I recommended what im most familiar with.

I have used every one of them, no issues to date with any of them.

OK, so I just got the Wood Classics. The Kem Aqua was only available in 5 gallon size. Thanks for the article Scott, the guy at Sherwin Williams had not seen it so I left him a copy.  Good day to go. They have all paint supplies 35% off and they have a coupon on line for 30% off paint and stain.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! I think you will find the product to be easy to work with, and a nice finish by brush or sprayer. Post up your results!

OK, I put a coat of the Wood Classics on a test piece and I love it!  For a installation/finishing schedule I was planning to put on a coat of finish, light sand if needed, install, fill holes with putty, and put on 1 or 2 additional coats of finish.  Does this sound OK?  Most of what I have read is on paint grade trim. It looks like my old molding was completely finished before installation but it has a really dark stain that hides everything. I figured that with a lighter stain it would show more if I did not put on at least the last coat of finish after filling the holes.  Also, is there a brand of wood filler/putty that you recommend?
