When looking for a product to finish a wood bathroom vanity top I came across Waterlox. Then I went to their web page and see they are pushing a new low VOC two part finish that they claim is just as good as the old.

Anyone have experience with the new version? Or should I just stick with the older 1-part formula?

Thanks

OK - no responses but I did get some good info from the supplier but I always regard end used feedback at a higher level.

For my application I purchased the original Sealer/Finish. I had heck of a time getting a coat down without bubbles drying in the finish. I tried my best paint brush, a new (expensive) 100% bristle brush, paint pad, foam brush, rags ... Then I found a white bristle/synthetic blend varnish brush at Lowe's and it was like magic - flawless finish.

New question - during my frustration I was thinking of topcoating the Waterlox with Target EM9300. For future reference I'm still wondering if this would work. I tried contacting Target by email and voicemail and have never received feedback. Just wondering if others have found a way to contact them. On my past couple of projects I have had a couple questions and have not received feedback. Wondering if it's time to jump ship?

Hello Mike,
I realize this thread is a few months old now, but some comments ...
Regarding Waterlox UTOS,  it is not a standalone finish unless you go in with the understanding it is not waterproof.  Needs to be followed up with successive coats of Waterlox original products, H20-lox, or perhaps another top coat of choice.  It mainly seems to be targeted as a lower VOC option with more consistent penetration as a first coat, and faster cure.  I sometimes use one coat of Waterlox original to provide a little more grain pop, depth and color, and to seal the fibers before applying water based products.  I also achieve something similar with dewaxed shellac (more affordable), just depends on how rich a base color I want to start with..  Anyways, UTOS now provides another option that's faster drying than the "original", potentially requires less product per application, no dust since you buff in, and lower VOC.
Regarding TARGET coatings, I too tried to contact them for 2 months over the summer with no response; (multiple calls and email).  When I got their answering service the final time, I expressed dissatisfaction that I had been trying to get technical support for months to no avail, and they said they would relay that info promptly.  I got a call back within in an hour ... Not sure what is going on there, maybe short staffed with COVID, I don't know ...  I was also asking about their EM9300 exterior topcoat, and being able to adhere over epoxy or oil.  In terms of oil, they stated let dry for 72 to 100 hours, then using their products over top should be fine.  This is a pretty standard recommendation for most water over oil applications.

Regards
