What is a pre-filter?

Hi,

I saw mention of something called a pre-filter that will put less strain on your HEPA filter.  I just ordered a CT 26 E HEPA.  What is a pre-filter?  Can someone please show me a link to this item and maybe where I can find instructions on how to use one?
