What's the catch with Festool craigslist ads like these?

The "I accidentally ordered two" sounds indeed like an obvious lie.

It is good you picked that up, always use your common sense with these ads. If you want to test, ask for photographic evidence of the original receipt. Good chance you won't get it.

It doesn't need to be stolen, there are more ways to get Festools than you think. But for a tool this new, and if there is no original proof of purchase, a buyer could better pass this offer.

There is also a chance it is not his tool and not his photos. He could have used some photos found on the net, in the hope people send him money and he will never deliver. There are a view con men active like that in the place where I live.

For me, when I read that "I accidentally ...." in the ad, I will immediately move on.

Normally I would agree with Alex, but the tool description has been written by someone who is clearly familiar with Festool.  So I dunno.  Maybe he's a Festool specific thief?  Or maybe it really is legit. Besides receipt, you can also ask for the serial number, which can be matched through Festool HQ to a verified purchase.

$30 savings isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things.

They usually say something like this one... "ordered two by mistake" blah blah... who accidentally orders two tools?

They come up every once in a while and I usually go straight to thinking they've been stolen.

Err, how does that not agree with what I said?

It's nothing. I can't believe you would take the trouble for this, I wouldn't have a second look at it.

I check Craigslist Philadelphia every Saturday for Festool listings. Today for the second time in a row, there were no Festools listed. I cannot remember this happening before. I guess people are holding on to them these days.

At least for me, whenever I put something Festool on CL its because I bought something to replace it, and this isn't really a season of buying for me right now. Maybe that extrapolated across the country is what you're seeing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a “newbie” woodworker - I became enamored with Festool, Lie-Nielsen, etc. -
And became as much of a tool collector as a woodworker.
I wound up with several Festool products and LN hand planes -
That I never used/never would - Still in their original packaging.
Through the trustworthiness of several great FOG members -
Via the FOG Classifieds - I sold those unwanted/unneeded/unused tools.
I was able to use the money to by other tools -
And my fellow woodworkers got some great tools at reduced fair prices.
I think that they trusted me because:
A. I’ve been a FOG member since 2007.
B. I was very transparent with: The tool info/photos - And my complete contact information.
