What’s the largest bit you’ve used in an OF 1400?

Hey Guys and Gals,

I have to flatten my first live edge slab soon for a desk.  I have small shop so unfortunately I don’t have a large enough jointer so I’m going to make a router sled to flatten it out.  I have a few routers in the 2hp -ish range but nothing larger.  I think my OF 1400 is going to get the ball on this one.

I was just wondering what the largest planer bit anyone has used with it.  I’ve used up to 1” to make dados with no problems.  I know Infinity Tools has a 2” bit for live edges.  I’m just not sure how much plowing the ole 1400 can take.

Anyone have any experience?

The maximum cutter diameter for the OF 1400 is listed at 63mm. At that size, the maximum safe speed would be 17615 rpm which equates to approximately speed 4.

For reference, the OF 1010 is 50mm and the OF 2200 is 89mm.

Obviously you need to take into account different bits of various types when considering size along with how much material you are looking to remove in each pass. Plenty of people use the OF 1400 for flattening slabs though, so it's certainly doable.
