Where can I find timber sized exotics in NJ area?

Hi all I'm trying to source some African mahogany or similar type of mahogany in about 4x 10 or 6x10 size. Im building an overhang for our front door and want to create a curved brace out of the same or similiar material as the front door. I'd like the brad to be slightly curved to pick up the lines of the arched door so would need something I seized to shape into a 4x4 arched brace.

Anyone know of a place in NJ or the surrounding states?

I agree with RKA about Hearne.  Some places I have found locally that might have or be able to get what you need are:

J H Monteath - Old Bridge
US Mahogany - Matawan
Boards and Beams - Fairfield
Stelton Lumber - South Plainfield
Burrough Hardwoods - Monroe
Willard Brothers - Trenton

Also check out woodfinder.com

Further south you might try these guys: http://www.globalteak.net/

I have never purchased there, just passed by, right off the AC Expressway @ Route 73. Call them first, I am not sure they have normal business hours.

I can provide some info on the list wooden Skye listed.

Monteath is good, but limited selection of exotics.
US Mahagony and Williard have a little more variety so you might have some luck with them.
Stelton Lumber is right around the corner from my office, however they always have bicycles and snowblowers out front. Never thought they actually sell wood (despite the name).  Have to walk inside one day, but I wouldn't expect much.

I haven't actually been into Hearne, but I've spent a bunch of time on their website and been on their email list for a bit. Impressive operation!  Can't wait to pay them a visit!  I missed their open house 2 years in a row now.

I agree Stelton lumber can be hit or miss, but once was looking for something and they offered to order, but I changed my mind.

I just looked at Boards and Beams, and they sell 12/4 African mahogany for $6.40 per bf.  you may need to laminate if they can't special order.  There phone number is 973-299-6100.

Not in NJ but you can call Delaware County Supply in Boothwyn Pa . They have a selection of exotics .  I have 2-  5/4 22" 14 footers of Mahogany . They aren't arched pretty straight grained . My shops in South Jersey . If you want to see pics let me know .

Nice!  I could probably throw a rock and hit them from my house!  Never knew they existed...have to check them out sometime!  Thanks!

Check out Rex Lumber in NJ, I think they are in Englishtown. We buy 1,000's of BF from them at work. They will have all the Mahogany you'll need.

Does Rex deal with retail customers? It seemed from their website they were wholesale only.

You could try Mr. Roberts Lumber in Barrington.

They usually carry a nice supply of domestic and exotic hardwoods. Some on the FOG say their prices are a bit high, but since there is a real dearth of hardwood suppliers in this area, and they are close to me, I have nothing to add.

I forgot to add...  Every January they have a big sale and people come from miles, and I do mean "miles", around. On the day the sale begins, pickups and trailers are lined up all the way down the road.

Good luck.

Mr. Roberts does have nice stuff, and we are in the desolate wasteland of South Jersey. They are probably the best supplier "near me", and that is only an hour drive.

I'm waiting for the sale to start to see if I can get some of the T&G knotty pine they have for the inside of my shop. Any idea when in January it will kick off?

In December I usually keep an eye on their site waiting for them to post the details so I can post the info here. If you check the archives, you'll see my prior posts.

Stay tuned.

The sale prices are ok nothing to write home about . There's plenty of suppliers in this area . I would say MR Roberts prices are some of the highest in this area . I think the sale runs Jan till Feb., at least that what it did last year .

I am trying to find out if they do retail, the one contact I had no longer works there. And our wood buyer at work has been out for awhile. Guess I could do the easy thing and just give them a call and ask.

I go to Mr. Roberts from time to time, and their prices are a dollar or two higher per BF than Hearne.  Their selection seems to vary significantly depending on how long its been since they got their last shipment.  I love that they have the cost on each board so there are no suprises at checkout.  The only problem I have is that everything is already supposed to S2S, therefore the boards are already 3/4" (for 4/4) or 1-3/4" (for 8/4), however they frequently will ahve a little bit of warp or cup, so to get a nice flat board I still need to joint/plane them meaning that everything ends up being a bit undersized.  It is alot less work than planing down the rough stock from Hearne though.

Was just cruising craigslist looking for reclaimed lumber and came across this posting for a South Jersey tree farm/sawmill:

I have no experience with them but thought I would pass along the info.
