where to find a flexible curve template

I was watching a Hammer video and the craftsman used a flexible gizmo that had holes every inch or so that allowed the user to screw it down on some particle board and create templates using the flexible piece as a guide for the pattern bit.  It's about 9 minutes into it.  It created a perfect curve template for cutting curved pieces for a chair.  I looked at woodcraft and Rockler and they only have the template guide that you can shape anyway you want but you can't screw it down.  You can only trace with it.  Anyone have an idea where I can find something like that?

Hi Howard well the first link takes you to Axminster Tool over here in the UK they are one of our bigger Festool dealers, anyway I spoke with them and they will ship to you direct, they would allow two weeks for delivery via Royal Mail and charges vary from 10 - 14 -24 GBP according to length required, I also saw somewhere that Felder / Hammer may be able to get them.
Hope this may help

Howard,

I think that Woodcraft carries what you are looking for.  It comes in two lengths (37" and 107") and carries the name of one of their house brands. Woodriver.  They are called "Curve Templates".  I am not sure about the hole configuration, but it has a system of knobs and brackets that may suit your needs.

Hope I was able to help.

That's it!  I looked at the woodriver one at Woodcraft but it doesn't have a way to attach it to a piece of particle board.  Great for tracing, tho.  Gotta check the exchange rate between the Pound and Euro.  Do they still charge the VAT if it's being shipping over here?

Howard,

You can certainly do as you please.  Have you thought about an investment in two-sided tape to secure the template to your workpiece?

If you are buying goods for export from the UK no VAT is incurred, but you will possibly have to pay import duties at your end.

Howard,

In doing research for you, I think that there might be a supplier in Canada according to one of the other forums.  I will look for that link and post later.

I use the stuff all the time.  However, I didn't think it had the strength to hold under the stress of a router table pattern bit. I'd be afraid of it catching somehow and flying off the workpiece at a bizzilion miles per hour and wreaking all sorts of havoc to me and my shop.  That's why I like the screw in version.

Howard,

Thanks for the update.  Sorry it would not work for you.  Would certainly have been a lot less expensive.

I know I looked into purchasing something from Axminster about 18 months ago.  Very nice people but the cost because of the weak dollar, the freight and duties kind of put a relatively simple purchase out of reach.

Good luck.

Thanks, Neill.  I'm all about saving $$$.  Don't know why I can't find something like this in the U.S.  I'll check and see if those guys have U.S. distributors.

Howard:

Maybe this template could be useful. I've never used one but you may find that the same slots used to secure the shape could be used to secure the template to your work. It appears it's sold by WCborg so maybe you can lay hands on one locally?

I have a couple of adjustable curves that are left over from the days of creating drawings without the use of computers. I have used them to mark the template stock and then prepared the template.

that's the one I was looking at Tom.  I don't think the slotted mechanism lies flat against the workpiece so if you tried to screw it down, it would twist.  You can't tell me someone doesn't have something like those other guys have on the other side of the pond over here.  It's too simple.  Maybe the Woodcraft guys could order enough to warrant importing them.

I've seen something like that somewhere. I can't remember if it was at Lee Valley or KMS Tools...

the only thing I can find on the lee valley website though is this.

That's what I use.

I think what Howard is looking for is different and has holes built in for strapping it to the work.

Here are the two that I use to make small shapes.

I checked with the vendor in Germany and can send the 1000mm Kirvinflex for 65 Euros to me in Texas including shipping.  That works out to be about $75 or so.  I think that's not so bad so I'll be ordering next week.  No visa or paypal, though, only bank wire.  Normally that would make me a bit nervous but it's not much money and this company certainly appears to be legit.

Bank wire is the norm in germany its very cheap for them, I doubt you will have a problem.

Buy at Woodline. They're having a sale right now.

a couple of years ago I found one by the Kurvenlinfix folks in Germany who had a distributor in Chicago or somewhere up there.  they had just started repping them in the U.S.  That one looks to be pretty much like it.  The cost is about the same.
