I just ordered an MFT3 table and would like to order some Qwas Dogs as well but I am not sure which ones I should order.  I know I want some of the regular Qwas Dogs but what about the Rail Dogs?  Are these useful with the full MFT3 table?  And I see they have some other products on their website.

Thanks

Rail dogs hook into the rail and allow you to utilize the hole pattern sans brackets. I rarely use mine, but I know some people use them a lot. [member=5]Bob Marino[/member] offers a qwas pack where you get a full assortment.

Using the Qwas Rail Dogs or any of the other "dawgs" out there will always limit you on the angles you can cut on the MFT to what can be produced with the dogs in the grid of holes.  90's and 45's are great and probably the most common.

My guess is that the overwhelming majority of cuts and the ultimate holy grail of woodworking is to establish an accurate 90 degree cut first and then a 45.

Very achievable using the dogs.

Get at least 4 regular dogs so you can make full use of the layout of the mft holes, both for precise placement of stock, and for holding pieces square during assembly.  I use a 3rd pair behind the mft fence as a quick way of ensuring the fence is properly positioned and can't be knocked out of alignment.  I don't use the rail dogs very often because I use the pivoting mft rail most of the time, but they're useful if the mft rail isn't attached and you want to quickly set up a cut.  They're also useful for precise repeatable positioning of the LR32 holey rail.

Thanks all!  I will start with 4 regular Qwas Dogs and then go from there.  Table will be here tomorrow!  ;D

Hope you don't mind I thought I would respond to this question with a new product.  www.qwasproducts.com makes great bench dogs for the MFT tables.  I've made a lot of drawers and cases over the years and kept thinking about alignment when I was using the Domino Joiner.  I contacted Steve Adams of Qwasproducts and he made me a pair of dogs that instead of being less than 19mm for 3/4" material they are just below the 38mm of two layers of 3/4" material. This greatly speed up alignment for drawers etc when you are using the edge for the Domino Joiner. they are call A-Dogs for Alignment dogs.  Go to the website and see the way they are used and you'll be able to see how they can greatly increase speed, accuracy and ease.

I use the rail dogs with Lee Valley's aluminum extrusion to make a fence that locks in at 90 degrees or 45 and if you use just one rail dog and clamp to a piece of aluminum angle you can set it at any angle required. I attached some pictures to try to explain the procedure.

Curious how you zero out your fence for accuracy with the stops?

I do something similar, utilizing Woodpeckers parallel guides which has the zero function built in.

Hi Peter.

The tape is on the wood piece that is held onto the aluminum with countersunk 1/4" bolts into t nuts in the rail. You just make a cut from the stop then adjust the wood piece until the tape reads what the cut piece measures.

I just made a mft style table. I used the varitas dogs. The Festool knobs will screw in to them to make removing from the table easy. I got the two long and two short pack. I also bought the was rail dogs since I don't have the Festool rail setup.  Here's a pic
