Which sand paper?

I would guess Cristal or Brilliant.  I suppose in the 100 grit range.  (What are you removing it from?)

Sorry can't answer that question, I'm asking for a friend. All I know it's varnish on wood.

O.K.  -- well the Cristal has a fairly strong backing and can be fairly aggressive and rough on a delicate piece (furniture or equivalent) in which case Brilliant would probably be a better choice.  Of course the sander being used has some influence on all of this.

Brilliant is the most versatile of sandpapers made by Festool. It is the best combination paper.

However, Cristal is much more aggressive and probably better suited for removing the finish.

You may want to get lots of paper as I've found in the past the paper will gum up with the finish in short itme.

I would also generally agree with cristal but which sander are we talking about? The Rotex with cristal and a slower speed to keep the gumming down a little will be a fast combination for removal. Brilliant is indeed a good general use paper but it will load up quicker, IMO.

Justin -

Just wondered if Rubin wouldn't be a good compromise?  It is heavier and more aggressive than Brilliant but less so than Cristal.

Neill --- I tend to use the Rubin on bare wood.  I have tried it for some finish/paint removal and it does seem to load and gum up faster than Cristal and Brilliant (my experience).  All of this I suppose depends on the sander as well as how thick of a layer of finish you are trying to remove.  Something like an old heavily varnished table might need a different approach than lets say a nice piece of furniture with a relatively thin layer of varnish.

A little bit on the Rotex and finish removal.  With Cristal and Brilliant, in Rotex Mode, I have very little problem with gumming/loading of paper --- really impressive.  Switch over to the RAS 115 and I eat through paper as any choice seems to gum up quickly --- I suppose the RAS just generates so much heat that it is difficult to avoid this --- and I've tried different variations in sander rotary speed and linear speed of the sander.  Latex paint seems to be a real pain in the rear.  The Rotex will take longer but it will also clean up spots that the RAS seems to have trouble with.
