Why is the 125mm sander interface pad twice as thick as all the others?

Been using 90mm and 150mm interface pads for years. Just picked up a 125mm sander and figured the pad would be a no-brainer add-on, but it's more than twice as thick as the others and it's causing seemingly pointless height clearance issues for me in addition to making the otherwise very quiet and well-behaved brushless ETS sound horribly off balance.

Is there some design logic here that I can't comprehend? Does anybody actually like it this way?

There are two thicknesses of interface pads for the 150mm sanders, the thicker being akin to the 125mm interface pad.  I'm pretty sure the interface pad I have for my RO 90 is thick as well, but I'd have to check to be sure.

For my work, I use either the soft pad or the soft pad and an interface pad.  I am happy with the combinations, but I understand why one might want thinner interface pads too.

Whenever I use an interface pad, I turn the speed down a couple hundred RPMs.

Speed doesn't really matter to me, it's physically too tall to fit into the opening I need it to fit into with this gigantic heap of foam attached.
