Work in Nassau, Bahamas

Good friends of mine has asked me to re-build a deck for them in the Bahamas, but it would be nearly impossible to get my tools through customs on the island. Therefore, is there anyone on the FOG that is located in the Bahamas?

Have them buy you new tools. That way you have them for the next project.

I sometimes ship my tools UPS or freight when I need them away from home.

The cost of doing so is the fly in the ointment.  Many of these islands have policies designed to discourage foreign craftsmem coming to work and thus take jobs from the locals.

How would customs or anyone know that the tools in question belonged to other than the owner?  Yes it is somewhat unethical (and possibly illegal) to have a parcel shipped under someone else's name, but I would say that it pales in comparison to the shredded moral cloth that others cloak themselves in.

I say ship using the owners name and enjoy your vacation!

Your comment that some countries make it difficult for tradespeople to come in and take work from locals can be solved by shipping the tools in the owner's name to the owner.  I find it difficult to believe that customs would extend the same hurdles to an owner as they would to a tradesman.  I never suggested that the parcel would be exempt from screening...of course it would be subject to screening [doh].
