Working desk on two cabinets

Hi guys,

I would like to get some feedback regarding my new project. I have a request to build working desk but instead of legs there should be two narrow cabinets. Next requrement is that the desk and the cabinets should be detachable and no screws in the table board. I am warried about stability of the whole thing as the board is siamese senna (beatiful but quite heavy wood) and the cabinets will be beech (considered cheaper version) or oak (my prefered choice). What would you suggest?

I am thinking of two solutions:

[*]glue two frame corners to the desk (around each cabinet)

Neither method allows for wood movement. The top would become loose or it would run the risk of splitting, or the corner blocks would break off.

The only option you suggest is to glue or screw everything together, right?

How wide are the cabinets?  My desk is almost identical to that approx. 16" cabinets with a 2cm quartz top that just sits on some bumpons to keep it from moving.  I did recess in three .25" x .25" steel bars into the bottom of the slab for extra support where it spans between the 2 cabinets.  I dont see the issue with what you have planned.  If you are really concerned beef up the backs of the cabinets to 1/2" or better to prevent any racking.

The cabinets should be standard 18 mm thick, standing 80 cm from each other. The dimensions are on the picture (w386, d450, h720).

I agree with afish, make sure the cabinets are strong and then let gravity hold the top on, located by a few pegs or similar. Just have a little clearance in say the rear mating peg holes to cope with wood movement.

Dowels or dominos in to the top and holes into the sides of the drawer pedestals.
It won't move and should lock it in from tipping unless someone wants to use the desk as a diving board.

This is safe but I am searching for a solution how to disassembly the cabinets and still use them independently as furniture. Holes will not make it fancy at all.

I would use Figure Eight Connectors. They allow the wood to move.
