1010 router tip me over the edge

I was thinking of buying a Dewalt 621k router this week I tried one at work another guy had and it looked quiet good and it works with my Midi vac. Then I was thinking should I go for a Festool 1010 set with the rail. Here in the UK dewalt is 180 and the 1010 is 335 is it worth the extra money.

I do have a few Festool's already but I am not fully Festool.
 
The 1010 will only take 1/4" & 8 mm shank bits. The DW621 will take up to 1/2" shank bits.
The OF 1400 would be better comparison to the DW621.

My mistake. I missed the k in the DW621k. That is a comparable router to the OF 1010.
One of the biggest things I have liked about Festool tools is how available accessories are for their tools.
You need to hold both routers in your hands & choose the one that feels the best.
 
No I think the 621k takes 8mm and 1/4 " here in the UK anyway its also 1100 watts near enough the same power.
 
I have a DW621K here in the UK and no, it doesn't take 1/2" bits (even though the US version does!).  I contacted DeWalt to ask them why, and didn't even get the courtesy of a reply.  (This is typical of them - I have yet to have a reply to any enquiry I've sent them).

My 621K is less than 3 years old.  It's been in for repair once already even though it is only used for occasional 'hobby' use.  The plunge is also now very jerky.  It's never been dropped and has had an easy life.

The worst thing about it is the dust extraction; it comes out of the top and the hose unbalances the whole router when hand held.  I've never used it in a table; I have a Triton router for that, chosen because it has "through the table" depth adjustment.

If it got stolen, I wouldn't replace the DW612K with another DeWalt; I'd go Festool, probably the 1400 which looks a beautiful bit of kit; well thought out.

I'm learning that buying cheap tools is, in the long run, expensive.  I'm dumping a DeWalt rail saw (horrible) and DeWalt vacuum (truly dreadful).  That's ?500 down the drain...
 
Yeah I was gonna get the of1400 about a year ago when they were cheaper they went up about ?70 at christmas. I already have an Elu 96e (getting old) and a dewalt 626 for big stuff. I just need a small router for hinges etc on site to take over from the Elu, I did have a Trend T5 what a pile of crap that was.

I did have a lot of trouble with Dewalt routers so I dont know why I am considering one but the one I saw at work looked good he had imported it from the US so I think it might well have had a 1/2" collet I dont know.
 
If you're happy with your 626 then I'd go for the 1010.  But if you need 1/2" then it has to be the 1400.

I share your view on Trend.  I am bewildered at their reputation; I've never had a router from them but the cutters are poor compared to most other brands, their ?50 router set square is "self assembly" (not much use if you want a reference square!) their universal router base isn't flat and...  I'd better stop now before I seem like a grumpy old man!

If you're looking for a router for smaller jobs like the hinge routing you mentioned the 1010 is superb. I own a number of routers and the 1010 is the one I reach for first. It is small, light weight and true one handed router.
 
I've got two old, about 16 years old ( one still in the box) PC 100's that is one of the best smallish routers I've owned and used. That said,  if I was going to buy another smaller router I'd get another 1010. It really is one very nice little router and most likely worth the money you'll spend on it.

The 1010  has a great chance of becoming your favorite Tool....    after fully pimping mine out I am now seriously considering a second one.

ok think i am going for the 1010 do you think i should try and get something free thrown in with it or is it too small a purchase to ask ? If I do what should I get with it ?

Free, Festool, good luck.  You might get a coffee mug but I doubt if you'll get anything tool related, if that's what you're thinking.

How wrong you are  ;D just got back from my local dealer who is going to have to order it in as he has no 110v ones in stock. He is doing the set with the 800 rail for ?317 inc vat or I might go for the router alone for ?297 inc vat and add a for ?62 inc vat the 1080 rail with holes for future purchase of the shelf hole jig  ;D.

With the router at the moment Festool are giving you the router bit systainer FREE worth ?50 inc vat  ;D ;D ;D

Now I am thinking of getting the LR 32 system while I am at it WHOOPS here we go down that slope again.

Cheers for the tip Mac but that works out the same as my local dealer anyway and I bet that they dont discount Festool just like all the other tool dealers that dont discount Festool.

Just gotta decide before Monday weather to get it with 800 rail or go for the 1080 with the holes, I already have 2 x 1400 1 x 2700 rails
 
The accessories are what makes the festool so much more than just a router.

The LR-32 is a great accessory. But for my money,I've gotten the most milage out of the edge trimming accessories with the 1010. It's a huge time saver when it comes to flushing up edging, or other joinery with similar 'must be flush to this surface' issues. You have to buy the whole thing in pieces, but very worthwhile... especially with a 1/4" spiral flush bit.

Second to that, I use the guide rail block a lot in conjunction with the fence, as a sort of offset base, to keep the router steady when I'm molding edges. I think it comes with the router already, but I know that there are some items which are accessories now, but used to come with the tool. (like the fence for the 1400...)

The edge trimming accessories are aren't well know items. They're a nice alternative to the MFK700 for those that can't justify the cost of a dedicated edge trimming router. I did a review you can see it here and check out my making sliding dovetails on large panels with the edge trimming accessories.
 
I put my order in today 1010 EQ set 110v with the 800 rail and free router bit systainer just gotta wait now.

Just gotta work out what to get next I found the 1080/LR 32 rails cheaper on the net GBP 56 and found that you can buy just the guide plate for the LR-32 system dont think I really need the full system not for GBP 280 anyway  >:(
