I was doing some online shopping yesterday.  I came across this option listed on a S-Class Mercedes that stickered at $131,870.00.

REQUIRED OPTION

SLATE HIGH-GLOSS POPLAR WOOD TRIM

Poplar for wood trim in a car that costs over $100,000.00?  I would expect some fancy burl, not some poplar that I can buy at Lowes or Home Depot.

I just had to look...

It appears that Poplar is the "base" wood trim.  Burl maple is also a $0 option.

Piano black lacquer wood is an $800 option, they could put almost any wood they want under it.  Ash is also an $800 option.

Who knew?

That's why I went with particle board trim on my S-class. Couldn't afford MDF.

I had cypress trim in my HUMVEE. That way if I left the top down and it rained or when driving through 3 feet of water it wouldn't ruin the trim.  [big grin]

Most likely about the desired color as poplar is very mild when in its natural color.

But still kinda funny.

It's probably painted and or covered in so many layers of finish it's unrecognizable.

Now my mother's bed made of poplar that I told her not to get... is showing a healthy amount of predictable impressions.

My Subaru has a high-grade burl plastic inlay.  Hard to get better than that, and it will never warp, shrink, stink, or fly apart at the seams.  [big grin]

Virtually guaranteed to crack and need replacement too - at least in North America. 8 of 8 panels in my last two Mercedes' cracked.

Don't know why they even offer it.
