Does anyone make an 8mm shank, 3/8" downcut router bit?  I have a Dado jig that I have to use a 3/8" bit in and I'd like to use my 1010 with the jig.  I have 1/2" shank bits, but they won't go in the 1010.

I assume you're talking about a solid carbide spiral bit?  You might have a problem as per the manufacturing process of these bits they are made from a single piece -- so it's one's thing to have the cutter be smaller than the shaft, but it seems like it would compromise the integrity of a single piece bit to have the cutting diameter be larger than the shaft.  Just did a quick check and didn't see any 1/4 or 8mm shanks that have a 3/8 cutting diameter -- only 1/2"  You can't use a straight bit?

Check this site:

1/4" shank but that should be no problem  [tongue]

If you are going to use a 1/4 diameter bit you might as well use a 1/4 shank. There will be plenty of options in that form.

Much cheaper too.

Let's change this up...anyone know of an 8mm shank, 8mm downcut spiral bit...prefer carbide?

How good an edge does the Festool HSS 8mm spiral bit produce?  Does it produce a feather free edge?  Does the HSS last?

Here are a couple options;

8 mm Diameter x 25 mm Length of Cut, 2 Flute, Downcut Spiral Router Bit

and

8 mm Diameter x 25 mm Length of Cut, 4 Flute, Compression Spiral Router Bit

They have alot of other 8mm shank end mill bits with various cutter diameters and I have had good experiences with ordering from them.

I just ordered and used a 8mm shank with a 7mm dia cutter end mill for drilling shelf pin sleeve holes, it was an upcut but I was impressed with the minimal amount of fuzz at the edge of the holes.

The cutting geometry on the first one is really meant for softer materials, like plastics. The second one is apparently for machining carbon fiber products, and has some really funky geometry:http://iscar.com/eCatalog/MoreInfo.aspx?mapp=ML&fnum=3595&app=71&item=5622870
