CMT has a European catalogue with all metric bits. I'd try picking out what you want from the catalogue and then give CMT a call and find out what they or one of their dealers can do for you.

To answer the question no it's not worth the extra effort to find 8mm bits.

There is no extra effort. They are available from Rockler, Lee Valley, Woodcraft, Whiteside, Onsrud, Infinity, finally Festool, and others in all major types and profiles.

Rockler only carries DT bits in 8mm, and Woodcraft only carries Festool as far as I can see.

They are over here in the UK but do loads of 8mm bits alongside 1/4" and 1/2". Quality is first rate - i have a number of their 8mm bits for my OF1010 and 1/2" bits for the OF1400 and all have performed flawlessly.

They ship to Europe so may be worth asking them if they will ship to the states. Alternately i am happy to help and ship on if their is something specific you are after.

I use Lee Valley for the 8mm bits. Good quality and I haven't run into a real short run before dulling like you did with the 48" of cut.... [eek]

Yes, and both Rockler and Woodcraft are dovetail. That was my point.

I got mine through Herr Dictum in the old country. By the time you chuck in some zobos or other goodies the cost is good. Without the VAT it offsets the shipping.

Proof? You think maybe it was a counterfeit festool bit? Perhaps some proof is warranted... Can someone get me a real festool bit for reference? I can send mine along with the authentic bit to a lab for a metallurgical analysis.

I dont know what all the fuss was about in that thread, but five years later they are still sold in NA. Amazon has the one the OP used (490980).

Why don't you just return the bit for another one? The one you have could be faulty. Even the cheapest of bits last longer than that and I find it quite surprising that a festool (I assume its made by Leitz like their blades) bit would perform so poorly.

I suggested yesterday trying to get some CMT bits as I've had real good luck with them and they're reasonably priced.

Today's suggestion  [smile]  would be to look  at Onsrud bits, they're an in-house manufacturer that services the CNC shops. They offer bits for plastic, softwood, hardwood, composites, aluminum, plywood, mdf, you name it.

On page 30 is an 8mm solid carbide upcut spiral & on page 36 is an 8mm solid carbide downcut spiral, just 2 examples.

It could  be a Festool bit.
It is extremely odd for any bit (even the cheap Chinese bits) to fail so quickly.

At first I thought this (490980) was not the same bit. When I searched that number the picture associated with it was of something like a 25x30mm bit. But then I remembered that when Festool did offer router bits I was always frustrated by the fact that though they offered many sizes in each style they used the same picture for all the sizes of bits in that style.

I hope the OP didn't pay for $70 for that bit but even if it only cost $10 he should recieve a replacement.
