Please excuse the quality of photos- I'm going to start another topic on that subject.

Wanted to share a couple pics:

1) Tea Box was made from hickory- natural danish oil was applied with sanding sealer and varnish top coat.

2) Valet box- this has a walnut top with hard maple/bloodwood insert.  Box is hard maple with purple heart accent.  Channel for the top insert was routed using OF1400 on MFT rail.

Hope they spur your creative juices for next year.

Regards,
Gerald

Very nice!

Now, where were you when I needed Christmas ideas?

Gerald, very nice boxes!  Do you have a photo of the valet box in the open position?
I would like to see the inside of both boxes if you don't mind posting some additional photos.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary,
Here are a couple pics as you requested.  My son-in-law is a musician so I wanted this to be large enough to put drumsticks, guitar picks, etc in there but it sounds it will be used for its original intention- valet box.

Thanks guys for the kind words.

Gerald

Gerald,
Really nice work!  Thank you for the pictures.

How did you join the boxes at the corners?

Thanks, Mike A.

The corners on the tea box were simply mitered with my Kapex and glued.  I was going to make a jig and cut in some decorative splines but ran out of time.  The top was assembled using 5mm dominoes.

The front corners of the valet box were simply mitered too.  The back corners were assembled with 6mm dominoes.

Since I got the Kapex, I've had pretty good luck with miters staying together; however, I generally do through dovetails on my larger boxes (like blanket chests).  Less worry about the joints opening up.

Gerald,

Thanks for the additional photos.  I usually use splines, especially on larger boxes, gives me that extra level of comfort knowing the mitered sides will remain together.  Great job on both.  You SIL should be very appreciative!
