A couple more stairs

Rob, thanks for your help with my cut string stair.  i coppied your scrolls by the way  ;D
Not a patch on yours but here is a couple of pics anyway.  first cut string I've made from scratch & quite a bit different from a conventional stair.

Very nice Alan, love the grain in the second newel, it's got character. I see you ran the brackets grain with the riser direction (horizontally) which is my usual way but the last one we had to run them with the strings grain, looks nice but wastes about 30% more wood. ( you should of said you'd like to use the same pattern as us......I could of sent you a PDF scaled to your rise and going  ;D )
Nothing wrong with your way of setting out a stair either, it's how I was taught and has been 'best practice' for centuries, my way is just an electronic version [wink]

Roll on the next one...geometric inclined plane perhaps!?  [eek] ;D ;D

Real nice stairs guys beautiful work as every, i got Modern Practical Stairbuilding & Handrailing  by  George Ellis in the early 90s it is a excellent book i've used the self supporting quarter landing a few times and it works great

woodguy7 i know the building regs are different for stairs in Scotland with regards to maximum rise and go, but if you set your winders off the center of the newel post like how you have  set them out, you can not get the 50mm minimum go against the post on a 95x95 post .i don't know if it applies to you guys up there but i've seen the building inspector knock stairs back down here unless its just a direct replacement that is

Yup, same up here.  The newels on this one are 115mm so therefor manage the min 50mm ok.  On smaller newels I do set the risers off centre to gain more around the newel.  I could have done the same here but I do like the face of the riser in the centre of the newel & because it worked I decided to run with it.

Pierre, perhaps I should have made myself clearer.  Here it is acceptable for the going around the newel to be from the face of the riser to the nosing.  I know this is not the "true" going but to be fair it is the bit you stand on.  If you have any more questions then can I suggest you send me a PM.

still with a 115mm post you'll not get 50mm go,, you'll  only 33.1mm on the face of the post(the post would have to be 174mm to work off the center) you would have to put a raking riser in but don't think that counts nowadays
