Here are a couple beds I built for my two oldest grandsons at the request of my daughter. The original plan was to bunk them, and they were designed so an adult could sit comfortably upright on the lower bunk to read stories, deal with clothing, or any of the other myriad of things one must do with small children. During the course of construction, my daughter and her husband found a deal on a house and plans changed. I didn't have to build the ladder and other bunk stuff, but we kept the original design for the beds just in case they want to bunk them at a later date.
These things were designed to be extremely sturdy. The little people who will be using them are, shall we say, energetic, and have way too much of both their father and their grandfather in them. I went with a mission sort of styling crossed with medieval sizing to make them too heavy for little boys to push around the room. They are constructed from 8/4, 5/4, and 4/4 red oak. There are 56 Domino joints in each one, or 112 mortises per bed. Most of them were with the little Domino, while the rails were fastened to the legs using the XL. The only metal is the bed rail hardware, which I bought from Rockler and is designed for bunk beds. The finish is Transtint Antique Maple and three coats of boiled linseed oil.
The progress pictures are poor quality cell phone pics, while the last two of the finished products are much better quality taken by my oldest daughter, the aunt of the two recipients.
