A great day for a cup of coffee.

I get my morning coffees at Starbucks each day.  I pay for it with a Starbucks debit card.  It keeps a running tally on how many points I have earned (“Points” = “Stars” in Starbucks-speak).

Yesterday the Barista asked me if I wanted to use my “Stars” to pay for my coffee.  I should have had about 40.  She said I had plenty.  In fact I had 2,651 stars.  They all have an expiration date in August of this year, which means all the stars were earned at the same time.

I can get 26 cups of coffee for the 2,600 stars.

All I ever buy from them is coffee.  No one can tell me how I got these.  Their advice is “use them”.  And so I am.  One of life’s great mysteries.

None of the baristas nor the store manager had ever come across this.  They all said it must be a computer glitch.  That there was no way to add that many stars at one sitting.

(I use a debit card now because the app stole $27.50 from my account, and when the customer service rep (Chat) was not coming up with an answer, I asked to speak with a manager, and then the chat was disconnected and the “print chat” feature did not work.  And finally the chat itself disappeared.

So maybe Starbucks was so guilt-ridden that they sent over the stars.  [eek] [big grin]

Stars expiring in August were earned during the month of January, not necessarily all at the same time.

If you truly have 2600 stars for the month of January, that's the equivalent of spending $1,300 at Starbucks using their rewards program, or $2,600 using an outside payment method and scanning the app; from your previous postings, I don't think either of those are likely to be the case.

As you pointed out, 2600 stars can be redeemed for 26 coffees, which is a retail value of around $52-$78 before tax, so it may be to make up for the lost cash that happened some time in the past.

Although, if you want your money's worth for those stars,  bags of coffee retail for $14-16 and only cost 300 stars each.

FWIW, I had my Starbucks Rewards card number stolen once about 6 years ago; I had auto-replenish set up on my account and lost over $75 in auto-replenish before I realized what was happening.  When I called and talked to a rep, they ended up refunding my credit card and issued a new "gold member" card.  I only use the app now, and manually refresh the balance as needed.  I'm pretty sure the card number was stolen with a skimmer when I decided to swipe my card instead of use the app way back then.
