A modular approach to vinyl album storage

Both our children are married and now into vinyl.  My daughter needed storage for their growing collection.  I had made crates for my son out of pine a few years back, but my daughter wanted something a bit nicer.

I carried forward the 'crate' idea with inspiration from the old Barrister bookcases with this stacking cabinet made from sapele.  I really like the ribbon grain of this wood.

Construction is 3/4 solid wood and 1/2" slats.  Design is made as a stacking unit.  Photos show the details, with the base, crates and top each separate allowing ease of movement as well as the opportunity to use this as traditional crates at some point in the future.

Overall dimensions are about 33" high, 26" wide and 15" deep.  Finish is a General Finishes Candlelight wiped gel stain and a GF wiped satin gel top coat.

I made a sliding 'bookend' that drops into the groove on the bottom shelf and uses a brass screw and nut to allow easy adjustment.  That particular piece was made on a CNC, which I am using more and more on small details on projects.

Assembly used through dominos and thru Miller stepped dowels for construction.  Base was mitered on the Kapex with a rabbeted groove to allow the crates to drop into it.  The connector between the two crates and the top use the groove and a drop-in piece to register the stacked crates.  The top has a similar drop-in piece that is screwed underneath allowing disassembly.

Festools used - saw and rails, parallel guides, Carvex, Kapex, Forstner bits, Domino, routers, drills.

I see this is an old thread but wow what a nice system. Thanks for sharing. If you happen to have the plans I would love to get them and try it myself. Thanks for sharing.
