A very serious Nova Voyager competitor...Laguna DP20

Just ran across this today, it's pretty sweet.

Laguna's sights were clearly set on the Voyager when they were developing this drill press. So many things are the same between both drill presses.

Notable differences that matter to me:
Laguna table offers both holes and t-slots for material hold down.
Laguna comes with an integral LED table light and red laser cross hairs.
Laguna table is significantly larger.
Laguna quill will travel the full 6" with just a 1/2 revolution of the quill handle.  [cool]

Nova motor is brushless.
Nova can be connected to 240v to achieve a 2HP rating as opposed to 1.5HP for the Laguna.

Pretty nice.  Overall, seems like an improvement over the Nova. 

You would think for $2K they could include a keyless chuck.

I keep lusting after the new drill presses, but I'm still using my 30+ year old Delta 17-900 that I bought new for around $325. I'd much rather push buttons than do the belt on stepped pulley thing, and the travel is only like 3.5", but I don't really do enough drilling with it to spend a couple grand. I'd rather buy wood.

In addition the Nova is a direct drive, motor to quill.

The Laguna use a belt to drive the quill. It does vary the motor speed to get the quill speed though.

I like the quill travel happens with one pull down and that everything can be set to start when the handle is pulled then off when released….I love my Nova but that would be pretty cool

The Nova is 10 tears old and was developed using their lathe motor and technology so Laguna and others should have no trouble building a DP that offers more. Why a port is not offered to plug in a tablet of lap top so a bigger screen with better graphics can be used is one of life's mysteries. The screen on the Nova is the single and only reason I haven't bought one. My gear head Arboga with a VFD does give stepless speed control like these DP's offer which is very nice but none of the other features.
