Advertising vs. Reviews and free posts

I get 50% of my work off Craigs List. I don't know allot about web-site design or advertising (outside of watching Madmen).
I'm curious of others experience with Yelp, Angie's list, and CL and whatever other means you use to attract business without bankrupting yourself with advertising expenses. Personally i dislike adds so i avoid creating them, yet there is the need to be visible and attract new business. . .

A little different approach with business cards and such, but seems to work good for him.  Good article and good business suggestions regardless.
