I start out with 13 sticks of ash 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 37 long. Clamp them together and then start carving. You can use chisel, power chisel, a planing wheel, or a carbide disk. Create whatever pattern you want. After that, sand, sand, sand. Hand sanding and power sanding until all the scars are gone. Next stain the red stripes red and reassemble with glue. Once that is done, mask off the stars and apply the blue on the union.

This guy does some beautiful, beautiful work. His flags are more rippled than mine. Mine are more of a quilted look.
