Another Monster Mantle

Tim & Ron - Thank you for the links.  I'll go check them out.  And thank you to everyone for your critiques.  I am not formally trained in design.

My portion is done and money in the bank.  Owner is thrilled.  She did call me on Thursday night disappointed that there wasn't a hidden compartment.  But there was.

It was a good project for me that transformed the entire room and allowed me to get re-aquainted with my Festools about too long an absence.

Peter,
At first, I was in agreement with those who suggested the mantel should have been thicker.  Now, i look at the finished project, i don't think so.  You have fairly wide horizontal lines where you have boxed around the old mantel brickwork.  Had you made the thicker mantel, it would have been too much weight to horizontal appearance and would have the tendency to take away from the cathedral effect of the vertical.

If i were designing and building, i would probably have gone with a thicker mantel.  that is probably from my background in masonry and for thicker hearths and mantels of stone or brick.  In this case, i think my designing would have been wrong. The overall job turned out really great.  The thinner mantels I think add to the feeling of height which is consistent with the windows on both sides and ties the whole thing together much better.

just a fine job.

All I can say is 'You done good'...

Looks great peter! Like design

Make actual mantel top thicker. Like 2" 1/4 thick with mice edge.

That one hit me square in the funny bone. Gotta love auto correct. Thanks for that [member=912]honeydokreg[/member] !
