Another option for Kapex mobility

When I got my Kapex during the sale, I really didn't want the UG stand. I was looking at immediate options with the long-term intent of building a custom Miter Saw bench.  So, for the time being, I had my Kapex mounted on a Keter Folding workbench which was fine in my shop, but not easy to move around.

Coming home from Nigeria for my six weeks off, I left my Florida permanent home to go up to our Rental in Georgia where my wife is currently stationed. There are a number of projects that I need to accomplish during the month I will be there. I have to build two new fence gates, replace two rotting outdoor stairs and stringers, build a raised bed garden for my wife, and an extensive repair on a German made bed that has collapsed.  Many of these projects will require the use of my Kapex, and using the Keter would be a pain.

I had seen a number of people in the Kapex threads using the DeWalt mobile stand. I wasn't really sure I liked it enough to buy. Others were using the Bosch gravity stand. I had that with a 4100 a number of years ago, and while it was OK, it wasn't great. What to do, what to do?

Back a few years ago, I had two Delta mobile stands that I used to mount a previous miter saw and occasional use for my planer, and other need-to-go tools. The Delta's were pretty good, but not super great. Nonetheless, I wondered how far Delta had come with new designs since that purchase almost 10 years ago. I wasn't even sure they made stands anymore...now that they are Porter Cable. So, I was somewhat surprised while picking up some gate hinges in Lowes to see a Delta mobile mitersaw stand alongside the DeWalt and Kobalt branded stands.  It looked very different from the originals I had used earlier, and I took a long hard look. I found it to be extremely well-built, easy to raise and lower, and strong tubular construction without weighing a ton.  Took the shot and purchased for $149.00 (on sale) and got it to the house in Georgia where it took all of 15 minutes to assemble, and another 10 to attach the Kapex.  I have since put it through it's paces, and I am VERY pleased with the solidity, ergonomics, and hardware that stand has been designed with. Fits the Kapex perfectly, though I needed different bolts than those provided with the stand. (Smaller 1/4").

For those of you looking at options, I strongly recommend you consider the Delta. Major advance over their previous offerings!

Here's the Delta with Kapex mounted in 60 degree lock ready for flat travel, truck or trailer:

Set up for cutting

Extension wings (with stops) extend to almost 10 feet. (This is a 10 foot 1x4 on the table)

Happy purchase!  Now to build the Miter cabinet for my shop! [big grin]

Looks like a cheaper, less "engineered" Bosch gravity rise to me. What makes you like this but not the Bosch?

Many things can be OVERengineered. This one does everything I want it to do, at a price that doesn't put a very big dent in my wallet.  Perhaps those who have to have constant mobility with their saws might need something much more robust, but for my purposes, which are light use outside of my shop, this is perfection!  I can't find a single fault with this unit...at least for my purposes.

Cheers,

Frank

I don't like the stands like this one that don't have continuos support for the material.  My last stand was like that and it was irritating.  Had to constantly move the bar in and out depending on the length of the material I was cutting.

Of coarse for the price, this stand is well worth it and looks to be a very good option for someone that either can't afford a more expensive stand or doesn't need one.

Two weeks since I originally posted and I have been using the stand while temporarily at our rental home in Georgia, so I thought I'd post a quick update....

I have had to move the Kapex around repeatedly, while going back and forth between the operating position, and the transport position. I've cut both short and long boards using the wings on the Delta which have remained accurate throughout their extension.  I have to say that this has been an extraordinary improvement over the Delta stand I had a number of years ago, and I am still VERY pleased with its performance and ease of use. Well thought out design and handles the Kapex as well as any number of stands (excepting the UG) that cost more.

Another nice thing about this stand is its tubular construction which allows for very easy removal of dust that is not captured by my CT. No voids or rails to accumulate the waste. Just a simple blast with my air gun and it's all completely clean. So BRAVO ZULU to Delta for creating a very nice, creatively constructed, inexpensive, and well thought out mobility stand for Miter Saws. I'm sure it will serve me well whenever I have go mobile with my Kapex! [smile]

Cheers,
Frank

P.S. Available at Lowes and was on sale when I purchased.

Harrumph!!!  That's much like putting wire wheel covers, fender skirts and a foxtail on a Mercedes...  [poke]

Oh... so you SAW my Mercedes! [big grin]

I plan to build a full permanent miter station in my shop. That will happen probably in the fall. In the meantime, the Delta stand is worth every penny! [tongue] [embarassed]
