I was doing a floor install at my home and was using a thin engineerd hardwood flooring, in total, 8mm thick. My problem was how to continue to lay the floor when I went through a door way. Up until this point, I was stapling the floor as I'd go and then run the next course but when I went through the door way, I wouldn't be able to secure the flooring with staples and continue laying the floor in both directions. Normally with thicker flooring, you could make a tongue and insert it and then continue laying the floor in both directions. This flooring was too thin to make a groove for a false tongue. and the manufacturer wants you to put the staple through the tongue side only.
Here is where the 4mm domino came to my rescue! I know that you want the domino to be one third the thickness of you project material but I didn't have that luxury this time. After a few test cuts, I put the 4 mm domino at what seemed to be the best height. I used those as my new tounges to tie into the next board with matching domino holes.
Some wood glue for the dominos and PL 400 to secure the flooring to the subfloor and I was off to finish the rest of the room. I'm not sure how else I was could have made that transition work, without my trusty domino.
