Another Variation on a Systainer Port

Here's a variation on a Systainer Port that I built. 

It's 3/4 baltic birch frame with 1/2 inch baltic birch shelves.  To maximize the holding capacity, I made the Systainer shelves pretty close together and used dowels in the shelves to allow them to easily pull out without the Systainers sliding around.  I debated using the 32mm hole system but in the end used drawer glides and shelves, placed a Systainer on one and then a spacer and the next shelf and screwed it in.  Went quicker and gave me maximum density in the smallest possible space.

You'll notice that I use it for an Inca Joiner stand as well.  It's a bit higher than an older stand that I had, but still works well for double duty.

The smaller details of a project are often what make the project standout to me. Nice project. I bet that it will get much use!!

Some have asked for dimensions and drawings.

Overall Dimensions for the cabinet - 25" high x 29" deep x 36" wide.

If you make the cabinet and put 4" casters on it, it WILL clear under a MFT 1080 in terms of height by about 1/4 inch.  If you don't want it under the MFT, make it to fit your stack of Systainers.

One other point.  I did not use the hole drilling jig to maximize how many I could put.  i started by making two trays for the bottom systainers and screwed them in place.  Then I put a Systainer in place an a 1/2" piece of ply for spacing and the next pull-out tray.  I did this all the way up and around so I could get maximum density of storage.

By using 1/2 inch ply with the registration pins you can reduce the weight and dimensions by making the trays to fit between the full-extension slides without a frame around the trays.

Nice design Neil!  In particular I like the way in which you use dowels to hold the systainers in place rather putting an edge around the drawers.

All 9 systainer drawers that I have built were built with an edge, thus losing space. 

I need to make at least 5 additional systainer drawers and will certainly consider using dowels the way that you have done.
 
I'd have to agree... I love the simple and slick design on this. I'm not a traditionalist when it comes to wood work... Love straight lines...

This is my plan, too, minus the dots.  Someone here posted a link for a green spray paint that perfectly matched Festool green.  My dominos will most likely end up finished in that way. :D

 
The color matching paint you seek is Benjamin Moore Sweet Pea.  I kid you not.
