The American Woodshop hosted by Scott Phillips is now using Festools. Scott built a drop leaf table using the TS 55 track saw and pointed out how clean the cuts were. He also used the MFT, CSX and T15 drills, CTL26, and RO 90 and RO 150 sanders. No mention of cost, just the quality of the tools.

That's interesting since last year he was using a Dewalt track saw.  I guess he saw the error of his ways.

Ha ha. Yes, that's what it would be. Nothing else.

I think the question that needs to be asked is > DOES FESTOOL HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS SHOW (ie did they give him the tools, paid him, etc etc)

Perhaps you can elucidate why that would be important or of any consequence?  It isn't to me.

Cheers,

Well, it's called guerilla marketing, product placement or other things. Bond has his Rolex, then Omega. He has his Aston Martin, then his BMW for a while (lol) whilst baddies drive Jaguars.

I mean, we don't see that chap who won the Framework thing around here so much any more do we. Not since he did the video for Festool America and we saw him use some Festools on the show.

I'd love to be wrong mind you, it's just that when you go to a trade show there are more Festool employees there than any other single company.

Bosch leave it to a shop to represent them, as do Mafell, and nearly every other manufacturer I can think of. So whist it may not be important (to you) it is interesting?

Festool's marketing is a thing to behold. I ought to know, I'm writing on a part of it right now.

From what I understand - Festool paid some of those 'enthusiasts' to be in some of those videos that they feature on their YouTube Channel

I think it is a little different if someone is using they tool because they really believe in it - versus they are using it because they got it for free, etc

Of course to the KoolAid drunks - it makes no difference

Doesn't matter if it was dressed it up as "hey, why not try this tool for a while, and hey, whilst you're at it, why not produce a pretty video & upload it to YouTube saying how much you like the [insert tool]". Ta.

I'm cynical, but whatever his name was that I was rooting for on Framework hasn't been around here for a while, if that was even him mind you.

At one time, Festool indicated that they do not pay people to use their tools, this was when This Old House (Tom Silva) was using on the show.  Maybe times have changed and they are in fact using "endorsers" on certain shows.  To me it doesn't make any difference.

If Festool wants to give tools or pay people for doing videos for them on their YouTube channel then that is their right.  As for Jory (framework), he was using Festools long before he went on the show and because of his creative designs I am sure intrigued Festool for promotional videos.  I know he was asked to join the FOG during the show because of the interest from other members.  If he doesn't want to be active, that is his choice, just like the rest of us.

If you mean Jory Brigham, most likely you'll find him in his shop making stuff.  Perhaps he and others were expected or required to do a bit of promotional work for the show or for the sponsors during the show's running but I don't think he was on this forum that much to begin with.  I'm sure he's working his butt off trying to run his custom furniture business, not hanging around the ol' FOG water cooler debating who-knows-what to the n-th degree.

If you guys are talking about Jory Brigham (the winner of Frameworks) - yes he is real.  I had a chance to meet him at JLCLive! (which I attended on my own dime).  He is a real guy who is now in a different element of his life and I suspect cautiously working out the next steps.

[member=44289]JoryBrigham[/member] - you around?  What are you working on?

Is the show available on line?
Yes, The American Woodshop.

Since this show is presented on PBS any business relationship is disclosed. PBS has dropped host that do not disclose their business connections if not obvious. Woodcraft and Kreg are providing funding to the show. Woodcraft is a Festool dealer so if one goes to a Woodcraft store they will see the Festool section.

I expect (and hope) that's true, but his sudden appearance and disappearance seemed "marketingy" to me at the time. But makes no difference to me either way. Was just citing an example of Festool's marketing at work.

Yep, wholeheartedly agree. As I've stated above, it all seemed gimmicky to me. I'm also aware of the timeline of the Jory "I make thinks with wood and Festools" videos appeared too.

Like I said, I'm cynical. I think the Festool marketing is is probably different in the UK too, so you might not see it from my point of view.

I'll take a look at that Peter, but last time Jory posted here he wasn't pulling any punches about the judges in the competition that was. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that he changed my opinions about the competition entirely.

Some of you that have been following Jory and Festool more closely may have to correct me on this, but I believe he was associated with the brand even before that show started.  If I remember correctly, he was featured in one of Festool's mini catalogs when they introduced the Carvex in the US.

Sorry, that's what I meant, but the link appeared here pretty quickly. Carvex and Rotex I think?

No, it was the planer. But he was using another sander in a video he did before that I believe.

Funny... [thumbs up]

I can't imagine the American Woodshop having any association with Festool.  I'm certainly not a hand tool aficionado or a purist when it comes to this stuff but the shenanigans that guy pulls on his show make me cringe.
