Hello everyone.  I am trying to rout a hing mortise for the small Blum box hinges.  I have there nice brass template.  My trouble is that It requires a 1/4" spiral bit but the MFK doesn't seem to lift high enough (too much bit exposed).  I am using the Freud 1/4" with 3/4" cutting lenght.  This is the shortest cutting length I can seem to find.  Any ideas?  Just shim it?

Thanks,
Todd

Perhaps the shank is too long and you can't choke up on the bit enough? If that is the case try to find a shorter bit or grind soem off the one you have. Unfortunately, that won't be fun without a diamond wheel.

Todd:

I don't know how far off you are from where you want to be or what the exact dimensions are of the bit you're using. This bit from Festool has a slightly shorter cutting length, 16mm (~5/8") and is 50mm OAL (~2").

Other than find a shorter bit, I think you already answered your own question. You could make a base of a workable thickness as a shim. You could attach it to the standard base by the two threaded holes.

Well, this doesn't exactly answer your question, but I've successfully installed Blum box hinges using the Doug Stowe method (story stick)/router table combo. It works great and I'm about to do another couple of boxes that way tomorrow. It's dtailed in his basic box building book.
