Anyone built a Systainer-Port?

I just bought my first Sysport this week. While I agree with Frank that the latches get easier after they are used some I also feel that for shop use they don't need to be latched when in the sysport. I can certainly see where Chris may feel different when traveling. I suspect that is the nature of the issue. Chris needs the efficiency of storage but dislikes the removal and replacing of tools as it is sometimes a pain getting everything in place. It is all a trade-off. Bigger systainers make for easier manipulation but take up more room, and would require more Sysports. As far as the cost and effort of making your own? I think I am with Per on this one. They are not cheap but when I compare them to other products that are made in what I would expect to be similar quantities the price is not so bad.

This is not to say that anyone is foolish for making your own if they want to. For me, I sometimes think I spend too much time on buiding shop accessories than building something destined to go out the door. For example, my daughter is going to have a baby in November, which will be here all too soon. Should I spend my time building a Sysport or a cradle? T%hat's a no-brainer.

Hi,

Build the sysport.      When the baby is too old to sleep in it move it to the shop were it belongs. Its a win - win :)

Hi all,

Lube yer latches Mateys.

Put a little wax or silicone spray on those babys.

They'll flick right open.

seriously. Same goes for any green on black switch (Wax these) in the Festool line.

Congratulations in advance Greg!  Being a granddad is great!

By the way, when I had to chose between building a cradle and a sysport, I built both.  :)

I built mine out of melamine (no finishing) and used LV slides.  Looking back, I would suggest these ideas as best practices for sysport construction:

1. Per is right - buy good casters!

2. Make the drawer deep enough to provide some storage behind the systainer, especially for sandpaper

3. See the thread on domi-drawers.  They are solid and come together in no time at all.

4. Build a lower drawer, put the systainer in it, put a piece of 3/4 ply or something on top of the systainer, then the slide on top of that - everything comes out even and level with no measuring.

5. Leave some room for growth.

I don't claim that any of these is original, found them all on the forum.

My festools are the only thing in the shop that are organized, and they fit in a small footprint!!

BTW, I use the routers a lot, so I also made a shallow drawer for bits, copy rings, etc.  and that one probably gets more use than any of the others.

Here's a couple of pic's of my trailer mounted sysport I took today.  Notice the tools are in the order that I use them more frequently (the crappy angle gauge is at the bottom because I still use it to get in the 1-2 degree ballpark when doing wood or laminate counter tops.  You'll see in the second pic the absence of any other crap, cords, etc. in the box with the tool.  The second systainer has all the stops, clamps, etc.  There was a post a while back where Christian O. said that the hole in the back of the Sysport was to be used for "open in emergency"  (my words, not his) and people seemed afraid to mount it after that.  With the lids off the systainers as mine are you can easily get to the tools, and heaven forbid you ever need to you can access all the locking mechanism through the front.  Mine is bolted in the trailer, I never mounted the casters as I can't see any reason I'd want to waste my time rolling this thing around or spend any time trying to Deploy before work and Secure after each job.  My oh my the time people will spend moving things around and not using them.  You have to look for and work on removing the waste daily?  Re-organizing your tools and work site isn't just something you do every few years.

T'ain't that at all.

I build stuff for a living.

I'd love to be able to afford a Swenson Sysport - but I think it would be way toooo good to put it in the workshop!
