I am looking for suggestions on how to scarf hardwood and sometimes plywood so I can join up longer lengths. There are lots of router jigs on the web, all basically the same, but I thought I would ask the question to see if anyone has a different technique before going that route. The router jig's all look similar to this:

I will probably use it as much for hardwood as plywood, so something more compact would be preferable.

Thanks.

Draw the lines for the scarf joint, then rough it out with a portable power planer then fine tune with a hand plane. It's pretty fast once you get the hang of it. The RAS with 24grit can also rough out pretty fast without all the shavings.
Are you building a boat?
