I'm looking for a stand to hold a workpiece (chair seat for instance) while I am brutalizing it with the RAS 115.  Although the dc is darn good, the shop is still a mess after I use it, so I need to take it outdoors.

Woodcraft has this Portamate Mega Vise on sale but I'm not sure its sturdy enough for the job?

Any experience with the Portamate or suggestions for a better product would be greatly appreciated.

Jesse,
I have the HD version. I works very well holding things. You can get a great deal of pressure with the foot clamp. Jaws are easily adjustable.

im sure that would work good enough for what you want. i have read good things about benchs like that. if you glued a 4*2 to the bottom of the seat if sure it would hold well in the jaws and give a clear clamp free surface

Looks like a jawhorse. Rockwell RK9000 Jawhorse Portable Workstation.  ?

Just today a Woodcraft promo came though at the same cost as what your link showed. Not sure it is a national thing or local.

Cheers,
Steve

The Woodcraft sale price was in this month's flyer.  It's not the same as the Rockwell.  I bought the Rockwell JawHorse from Lowes and love it.  It's heavier duty and has gone up in price quite a bit since its introduction.  I definitely want a second for clamping long boards with the two.  That seems to be its only downside so far, when clamping a long board the JawHorse can easily tip depending on the balance point and any pressure you put on an end while working on the board.
