Who is making something, and what?  You answer might help out a fellow Fogger who is suffering from wood block.  Anything you have made in the past?

Hi Peter
I usually make a couple of bowls or boxes for close family or good clients at this time of year...however this time I had lots of oak veneered 18mm mdf and solid oak narrow boards left from a couple of big cabinet and walk in jobs. After I separated out the cuts I'm going to use to line out my new van (due this week), I wondered if I might use the other pieces to make a give away item that everybody wants...
I'm making the solid oak boards into boot pullers (the ones with the "V" cut in the ends) you dig your heel into whilst standing on it with your other foot.
My master stroke this year though is smart phone / tablet stand. It only requires a small piece about the size of a smart phone with an 8mm rebate across the width about 8mm deep set at 15 degrees and any apple device will sit stable all day long.
I bought some 12mm felt pads for the bottom, took the edges of with my OFK500 and put my logo sticker on the bottom.
They look great, work very well and cost nothing really to make.
I've made 70 in a couple of hours and will give them away next week.
Hope you find some inspiration.
Regards
Scott

I have a deadline for the current contract of Dec. 20,  that I will working to fulfill. That would only give me a few days to make gifts. I like the cell phone holder / charger stand idea.  Maybe you have some plans or. Pic of this? That's something I could bang out in a couple days.  I would need to make about forty of these.

Cool ideas!  Keep them coming and images help everyone.  Making something with your hands is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Peter

I keep looking at the bottle holders that look like they defy gravity. They cant be that hard to make!

Oh yeah.  I made my granddaughter a walnut box with 2 removable trays and filled it with art supplies.  I also made the project in this thread as a gift Bracelet and Box.

I may be in trouble with my wife as she told me this afternoon that she was envious of the bracelet and box.  I stopped making stuff for her as gifts years ago because she is just too nosey and always coming into my shop to see what I am doing.  She even asked what the package was I received from my sister last week (I paid her to make a necklace with hand-painted beads) and got put out with me when I wouldn't tell her.  Just what is a guy to do?  [unsure]

Made this cradle for my niece's daughter.  Walnut with maple spindles.

It's pattern routed so very quick to make.

Baltic ply bottom and I used screws and plugs to assemble.

The bedding I purchased on eBay and the seller custom made it to size.

Almost done an easel for my 2 and 4 year old children.  white board one side and chalk board on the other.

Here are several projects I made 2 years ago.  Last year I was recovering from a shop accident and didn't get to make Christmas presents.  This year I am making peppermills -- segmented like the screwdrivers below, a dog bowl platform for my youngest daughter, and likely some more pens, which I typically do throughout the year for birthdays or other occasions. The dog bowl paltform is my first Festool project with my new TS 55 REQ.  Used it to cut up the plywood panels to form the box.  Wow, amazing accuracy!

This step stool was for my oldest daughter who is 5' 2" and was always pulling a chair into her kitchen to get something down from the top of a cabinet. It is made up of 43 (I think ...) pieces of wood.  I used sassafras and walnut.  This was a challenging project -- to get all the pieces precisely to size so they all glued up and only required a bit of final sanding.

Thes screwdrivers are made from plastic handled reversibles I got at Home Depot for $2.99.  I Dremeled off the handles to get the socket out. Rockler sells the kit for $6.99

This is a Rockler Pizza Cutter I did for my wife.  Handle is Honduras Rosewood.  I also did some wine stoppers but need to do some digging for the picture.

Hi,

I have not posted images before so hope to have got it sorted ok  [unsure]

I recently was able to return a favour to an engineer friend of mine who had helped me out working some Stainless steel fittings for a pair of gates I had made.  It sort of doubles up as a Christmas gift also.

He had purchased a set of 5 wood chisels in a plastic container and then purchased another 4 to make up the set.  The problem was that after I had honed them for him he had nowhere to keep the additional and razor sharp 4 chisels.  To get over the problem and to return a favour, I made the box below for him as a thank-you.  Bearing in mind that these chisels will be kept in an engineering environment the box has been made to withstand the 'rigours' of their new environment.

Incidentally, most of the oak used is re-claimed from old and redundant kitchen cabinet solid oak doors… a great way to obtain some seasoned materials!

Thanks for a most interesting site...

With best regards and compliments of the season to all,

Jeff.

Very nice box for the chisels. I have been wondering how to store my chisels and this might be the way. Are they resting on the end of the blade when they are standing up?

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

The only chisel that sits on the oak guard rail underneath is the largest one.  This is because the hole that the handle sits in needed to be enlarged to take the width of the blade and the chisel is a bit longer than the others.  It would be possible to overcome that should I make another for my own sets of chisels… you can always see a better way to tackle some aspects of a job when you have done it once!  [big grin]

The other chisels are sitting nicely in their respective handle holes which was drilled and then routed with a pencil round to suit the handles size.  They are a snug fit and do not slide up and down at all when in the box with the lid closed.  The bottom of the chisel has its own little recess in the rail to sit in, which was made using the Festool Domino.  The business end of each of the chisels is protected by an oak cover piece.  This works both ways actually because you could do yourself some serious damage if they were not protected.

Best regards

Jeff

Very nice chisel case. Functional and great looking!

I'm finishing the Christmas presents for the "kids" that I started last year at this time. Jewelry boxes for the girls, dresser organizers for the boys. Mid project last year I found out they wanted cutting boards, 3 dozen cutting boards latter I was out of scrap wood. Four of last years gifts pictured.

I'm kinda surprised that I could find all the pieces.

Here is a couple of quick pics of the iPhone / ipad stand.
It's 120mm long by 95mm wide.
Rebate is 15 degrees, 9mm deep and just under 8mm wide.
I hope the pics are up the correct way.
I'm almost embarrassed to post these after seeing Jeff's superb chisel box.
Your friends a lucky boy!!
Nice work.

What thickness is the iPod stand and how far in from the edge did you start the groove to sit it into? I like the apple logo on it as well. Are they just stickers you applied?

It was my 5 wedding anniversary recently, which the wife said is wood so I am expecting something nice.

Made this with some scrap ash and walnut.

Applied some surfix heavy duty oil after sanding down to 320 with the rotex 150

[attachthumb=#]

Then did some freehand routing then sanded middle section with delta pad
