The last year or so i have been doing more and more work in philly and it just keeps growing. Before i was doing small 2-3 hour stuff but now im doing week long projects. What all do i need to do to be"legal"  in philly? before i never thought about it until i was working on a project and the electrician warned me that i need to get "legit" as he got fined pretty heavily a few years back when a meter reader was by the book and reported him.  ::)

I just figured i would skate by since i wasnt there for long but now im just playing with fire

I need to apply for a "business privilege license" "business tax license" "Business gross receipt tax" is there anything else? I would also like to apply for a contractors parking permit also. i love how on phillys department of revenue page their slogan is "making it easy to do business in philly" with nutter smiling...Yeah right!!! gross recipt tax, really?!?!?!?  [blink]

30% of my business now is from doing work in philly, too much to turn away as much as i would love not to work in philthadelphia [tongue]

TIA!!

You might want to send a personal message or reach out to City Properties Inc (a member here).  I believe that he works extensively in Philly.

Not that I can help you much, 'cause I try to stay out of the city... but had a two referrals which took me into chestnut hill last month and started to look into it.  Kinda blew my mind and decided to get in and out.  I empathize with you and wish you well.  Keep us posted please.

Here I thought doing business in MA. was ridiculous.

I can't give advice on Philly, but I have memories that were burned into my mind when I was a project manager for a retailer and I was in charge of doing renovations of big box stores in Philly years ago.

I will be polite and say that I have accumulated many a story to share when a glass of a favorite beverage is available.

Negotiating the maze is a challenge.

Yup, and until Philly (and every other government like it) lightens up so people can serve each others' needs via private agreements, the people there won't see prosperity.  Sad.

Not familiar with Philly, but I'm a Chicago guy, so can't be that different.  As much as the upfront costs can hurt, I'd recommend seeing a good business consultant, or even an attorney.

In a previous life we installed kitchens for the big box chains across the greater Chicago area. Once properly set up our bookkeepers were able to keep up with all of the 30+ municipality's different licencing requirements without much effort, but we could not have attacked that task without professional help.

I'd be amazed if there weren't "umbrella" contract service companies that took over the complexity for a fee ??

If there aren't I may just pop over and set one up  [wink]
