Apple announces iPad2

Without a doubt Apple put the smart phone industry where it is today. They also made this new fangled tablet craze. However in both categories I feel they offer less of a product when put up against their competitors. I mean even the forth coming Blackberry tablet uses Flash and can multitask properly.

Apple makes very well packaged sleek looking devices. Their design team is top notch and probably the best in the industry it's the inside parts that fall short not to mention their wacked out decisions to exclude industry standard features.

all my apple products multi task just fine, and i can shoot stream and airplay music anywhere in my house or workshop wirelessly right from the palm of my hand. i have not found not having flash on any of my ios devices a disservice at all. mobile me is great too.

the other devices might have some more features but they are nonsense features to me.

Ghost, it is my understanding from all of the rumormills on the web that they decided to forego flash because it's a battery hog and found quite frequently in pop up ads as well. Having said that, I know there are a lot of sites that use flash for video. The only one that bums me out is Fine Homebuilding.

I know that Apple is very cult-ish, but I do like the security of their "primarily" closed system and I'm willing to sacrifice a few features that are not major necessities for me!

Bob

you are correct Bob reguarding flash. That is the was the reason apple gave for not using flash. if it is the truth i do not know. i think it is because apple has something better up it's sleeve that websites will soon have to adapt to, many websites are already designing their websites around flash for the simple reason that they are not viewable on apple ois devices.. soon it will be even less of an issue with people

Flash isn't even my main gripe with apple, it's just an example of their stubbornness. how about the ability to change a battery? Upgrade memory? Or connect with what the rest of the world sees as standard. Again nice package, lacking substance.

Or the apple website has been updated http://www.apple.com/ipad/

Plus Steve Jobs made the announcement [smile]

Oh, wow, I guess I missed it... Maybe I can make amends if I camp out in front of the local Apple Store three weeks before they go on sale.... [wink] Gotta get one, gotta be first in line, Steve says it's the greatest thing since sliced bread!  [huh]

If you want to know where the iPad is going read up on the history of the iPhone.

Jobs/Apple have become so typical in product releases it's boring: Release a half-finished product, hype it to the moon, make a ton of money on it and use a tiny fraction of that to finance R&D on the next generation. Rinse and repeat a couple of times until you finally manage to bring to market a product that's actually worth what you've been charging for it all along. In the meantime The Faithful and those dumb enough to fall for the marketing hype will have made you a billionaire many times over by buying each and every unfinished product you've hyped along the way....

I've always thought Jobs was a genius, I'm just not a big fan of his business model.

BTW, Bill Gates announced the "tablet" in 2001. And it ran on Windows. They never caught on with the general public but they've been popular in the business community ever since.

Bill

BTW, nVidea has already released samples of their quad-core ARM processor. So much for the dual-core A5 thing....

Funny thing Adobe is working in a converter from Flash to HTML5 [big grin]

I am a software engineer working with Unix, Oracle and Windows.  My current client provided a laptop with extreme security that prevents me to do many things that I used to do.  I normally travel with my own laptop, but I didn't want to carry 2 laptops, so I traveled with client laptop and my Ipad. The ipad allowed to do everything that Ido normally.

That was the best test, not having the laptop forced me to use the ipad at full potential.  No USB, Well, I have dropbox to have access to my files, Ihave ms office apps, remote connect to my laptop.

Idon't know about the rest of the world standards, there is none in web development, unless we talked about HTML, there is always 2 or more ways to do the same thing.

Sounds like Festool with the MFT1080.  Or a $800 contractor's wheeled mitersaw station that doesn't allow crown moulding stops??

Seriously though, all the complaints about apple are the same shortcomings you all accept with open wallets from Festool.

Poor guy gets beat up by everyone because he knows how to corner the tech market and make a profit.

Let's go drag him out of his house and lynch him.  I will supply the flaming torches.

Last time I checked, Apple does not hold a gun to anyone's head forcing them to buy their products.

Good grief.

I just don't buy the Festools that I think don't measure up either in performance or cost effectiveness. If I have a need for a particular tool and Festool makes what I consider to be the most suitable tool for me(after careful evaluation) then I buy it. If someone else makes a tool that I think meets my requirements better, then I buy that one. No fanboy stuff for me, I don't open my wallet unless I think I'm getting a product that meets my needs better than anything else available in a fairly generous price range. Well, let's not talk about the Kapex.....

My first iPhone was the iPhone 4, I bought my daughter a MacBook for Christmas a couple of years ago and my next laptop will most likely be a MacBook Pro. Apple makes some genuinely excellent products, you just have to ignore the hype and drill down past the marketing BS to figure out which ones they are.

Not trying to troll,serious question.

All you iOS-hating Android lovers, what can you do on your droid THAT YOU ACTUALLY DO that you can't do on iPhone/iPad?

I don't really care that I could theoretically do a ton of stuff that I have no functional use for.

I could remove the limiter on my car, but I don't ever go over 155 so who cares...

I find people, in general, who crap on apple stuff are all theoretical arguments of "yeah, but I can't do something." windows and android have limitations too, so you're being caprecious in your complaint selection unless it actually affects your stubborn ass ;)

Been using the motorola toy for around three months now.  Its a very nice toy, but it isn't as good as the new I pad.

There are several things i can do on my Android that can't  be done on the iphone, a big one is expand upon the memory thus prolonging the use of the device without having to delete things. Should something go wrong with the battery I can simply replace it with out having to take it in, and pay for service. The Android OS is fully customizable, you're free to install many different flavours of android which are customized by independent developers, these are all optimized in different ways to improve performance depending on how you use your phone. The interface is fully customizable with numerous Launchers on the market that allow you not only change the way apk's are organized but how they operate. That's a start I suppose. I don't hate the Iphone I'm more peeved at the misconception that it's the best on the market and nothing else come close to it.

Oh ya and I hate Itunes

I'll pass on the xoom, I already have one android based phone that glitches out 24/7. Ive had my iPad for about a year now and use it everyday, yet I would not know. How to deal with a problem because I've never had one, to be honest I'm not quite sure how to turn this thing off o well I'll figure it out when I pick up the iPad 1.75

Which phone do you have?  If you're on a phone with anything but the base OS, odds are the glitch nature is due to the OEM software customization.  Pretty much all f them are terrible.

Well, until they added Verizon, I could make calls without dropping (literally) every minute.  I had an iphone (free, buddy works at Apple, he works on the touch screen stuff), and gave it back to him, cuz as nice as it was, it didn't matter due to its utter inability to function as its primary role - a PHONE.  I got a free android phone (wife works for the goog), and while it isn't quite as refined as the iphone, I can pretty much pick any carrier, and guess what?  I'm not locked to AT&T, and I don't drop calls (literally) every block as I drive through the city.

The question shouldn't even be what can android do that the iphone can't rather what can the iphone do that android can't, I'll tell you.. nothing

......

I use the iPhone 4, have no idea what an Android phone even looks like, but I'd like to be able to browse the flash-based sites that belong to a whole bunch of my photography friends. And a lot more sites out there that just flat don't work on an iPhone or iPad.

I could give a Southbound end of a Northbound Fido about Adobe and Apple's history. Whether Stevie J likes it or not, a WHOLE LOT of the content on the Web is based on Flash. Yes, it carries a heavy hardware overhead. Yes, it's vulnerable as Hell to security breaches. But it's there and some of it I'd like to access on my mobile phone.

So Steve, suck it up and deal with it. It is what it is, Flash is here right now and other manufacturers don't seem to have a problem with it. It was a major player on the Internet before the iPhone idea trickled down your pantsleg. It wasn't a big deal until you made it one...

Noah, this is something I can't do on my iPhone that I could do on an Android phone(if I had any interest in getting one). It's something I'd do every day. I have friends that paid thousands of dollars to have websites developed around Flash. So now I need to tell them to spend thousands more to have their sites re-worked because SJ doesn't like Adobe and I can't see their sites on my iPhone??

I don't have a 'Droid but this is something that that I ACTUALLY DO every day that I can't do on an IOS device.

Hey, you asked....

I have a htc hero not sure what the software is but it sucks, phone docent work right, I'll push on someones name and it will call someone else. Very very irritating, it does the same thing with texts sometimes, I'll send a text to my wife then my friend from out of state will text me back like what the hek are you talking about.oh and 3 different times I've picked my phone up off the charger and all my contacts were gone!!! Then people say it's my fault for not backing up my phone every five minutes, I call bs cause every phone I've ever had that's not android has never erased anything.
