We always see people accusing Festool of price fixing all over the internet on various forums. I am thinking of upgrading from my Nokia 5800 to an I phone 4 this year but while looking at prices have noticed that every network has the exact same prices for handsets surely this is price fixing ? Im on Vodafone (UK) has anyone else here upgraded recently ?

Are you set on an iPhone?  I recently upgraded to a Droid X.  I'm very happy and there are many pluses:

  • Larger Display
  • Adobe Flash Support
  • Ability to run multiple apps at once
  • Apps can be installed and uninstalled direct through phone....not through iTunes
  • ability to remove battery and expandable memory card
  • HDMI port
  • 8 MP camera
  • Longer Talk Time
  • 3 noise canceling microphones vs. 2
  • Talk to Text built into OS

Obviously, it is of personal choice but there are options out there.

I Just upgraded as well coming from a Blackberry and considering an I phone, if they would have hooked up with Verizon, I settled on the Droid X and absolutely love it. Jim nailed several of the highlights.

Yup I just upgraded from Blackberry to an android phone as well and it's a mean machine. I'd strongly consider the alternatives to iphone if i were you

I know what youre saying when I upgraded last time about 18 months ago the Nokia 5800 looked better on paper than the Iphone 3gs but its the apps that win it for the Iphone. The apps for Nokia are mostly complete rubbish.I never wanted to fall for the "OH YOU GOTTA GET AN IPHONE THEYRE THE BEST" but I must admit when I have used one they are so nice to use and once again its the apps. Most places you go now they say download this app for your Iphone they have much better back up (apps etc).

EDIT just had a look is this similar to the droidx ?    http://www.motorola.com/consumers/GB-EN/MOTOROLA-DEFY-GB-EN.do?vgnextoid=9ef68e26bfe7a210VgnVCM1000008b06b00aRCRD

The trouble with an i phone is if i stay with Vodafone it will be march when i upgrade it will probably cost me £170 for an iphone4 and I will drop from (600minutes 500meg internet unlimited texts) down to 300 minutes but pay £30 instead of £25 per month so it will cost me more for less minutes to have an Iphone  [eek] [scared] :o where as that Defy I can have early for £40 and probably stay as I am billwise

I would say go with whatever works for you bill-wise.  For us Verizon Wireless customers, the iPhone isn't even available to us.  I was always drooling over the iPhone but at last the android based phones are a viable option.  And like others have said, there are more great phones to choose from.  The Motorola Blur looks good too.
Side Note: I was always a smart phone opponent.  My clamshell was good enough for me as I hate texting.  But I was sold by a good salesman with the idea that I could just "play with it" for a month and see if it works for me and after a very short time, I was hooked.  It is absolutely mind blowing what these things can do.  You almost don't even need a laptop anymore.  And it's right at your finger tips no matter where you are.  The apps open and close at light speed and surfing on the web via wifi is as fast as any computer I've used.  To boot, the phone sound quality is as good as any land line I've used.

Well, I would not go that far, WiFi and 4G are not even close to my broadband line in speed  and actual usability, but yeah I get what you are saying.

I am a blackberry user my next phone will definitely be a Droid phone and probably a Droid based "Pad". Not only will there be more apps available for that platform but there are definitely more choices as far as hardware is concerned.

If you are a text user, that touch pad keyboard on the iphone really blows.

I love technology and I would say I am an early adopter but I just don't get the ipad.
Why buy a machine that can't run flash?

Why an iphone when you can get an HTC EVO or similar.  They are better phones in my opinion and a few of my friends have traded their iphones for Evo's. Do they have those across the pond?

Odd really.   Europe was a head on mobiles compared to the USA  I remember going to USA years ago with my phone.  Which was the this one I think cant remember for sure I have gone through LOADS Nokia 6230.  I remember walking around and getting loads of looks and when I was at the theme park Florida while queuing I could see people looking at the phone while I was playing on it.  Also people where shocked when it played Mp3 music as a ringtone.  I hardly saw any one with a mobile I was saw more people with walkie talkies in the theme park. People I did see often had old flip phones which most of them had on loud speaker or head phones like you USA people didnt want the phone near your head or something.  In the UK every one of my friends had mobiles people as old as 11yrs had mobiles even contracts through der parents I was one of them.

When talking to Americans on XBOX when I got back to the UK I asked why mobiles not very popular I was told its mainly for the Rich people as landlines are free to call.

Any way!! Strange how times have moved on so quickly and now USA is throwing out Iphones! biggest thing out!

I know its a bit random!

There are a ka-billion apps for both iphone and android. It depends on what you want. Most iphone apps have an android equivalent but as has been posted there are things that android can do that the iphone can't. Free turn by turn GPS navigation instruction i use quite a bit, as you approach your destination it pops into google street view with an icon flagging it. There are some BETA apps google has put out, they're still in the testing phase but the technology is fascinating, for example "Google Goggles" I'll admit this is far from a finished release, it's still got some bugs but it's amazing what these "phones" can achieve.
Google Goggles

google Voice search

Introducing Voice Actions for Android

I find this keyboard really handy  as my phone only has a touch based keyboard.

That Google Speech is impressive!  I dont understand why non of this can be done on the Iphone aswell?!    Them Android apps and features defiantly make the Iphone look CRAP!

With Ipad one App one app only works at one time  and apps wont work with or for another app this is a big no no I think!   This is why this google voice search works and wont work on a Iphone as apps only work within them selfs. The only thing on Iphone what carries on running while you do something else is music! ITS RUBBISH!   I still like my Ipad though I have to cus I payed alot for it [sad] but they need to update the software they say it has multi task but it aint really multi task is it.    Owning an Ipad for abit now and knowing wa I know now would I buy one?!  No! Untill they made it work with Flash and apps which work with apps!

To be fair google has released a voice search version for the iphone, it's just not integrated into the operating system as it is with android. it's a separate app and a little less robust.

I should also point out the tethering options on android. you can plug your android into your laptop and use it as a modem. Your laptop accesses the internet via your wireless network, great for field work

You said it
Thats problem with Apple Ipad Iphone no app integrates into the system so it limits what apple apps can do massively. If other apps can control other apps or control other parts of the iphone or Ipad it would be far better and you will be able to do more with the Ipad I phone.  When I have been using the Ipad everything is in its own bubble and you cant pop the bubble so your stuck with what that app can do inside the bubble.

the htc evo would be pointless in the uk because we have no 4g network yet, O2 are working on it but we have no or little coverage as of yet

Why would someone get an iPhone instead of an Android?  For me there'd be only one reason.  I have an Apple computer and use Apple's address book software & calendar software, and I'm probably going to start using Apple's email software soon.  Information added to a contact list, a calendar or an email on an iPhone could be "synched" with my home computer.  Can Android phones do the same?  I guess "where there's a will, there's a way," but how many extra steps would there be?

Regards,

John
