This is one of two desks that I have to make, I'm doing this one first as the other was ordered at a later date.

Onto the timber I selected for the top, this needs to finish at 1380 mm x 620 mm x 23 mm. This board measures 2.8 m x 305 mm, so should finish at about 600 mm. This means I need to glue a 20 mm piece in and hope to get a good grain match.

All machined up, I shoot the edges in by hand. Talking of shooting planes, an old record that i bought from ebay arrived today(forgot to take pic's but it seems a good-un).

Glue up the top, I've used titebond II for this, and left over-nite.

The grain match is good because I can't see which side it was now.

Onto the carcass sides, there are four to do, and they are to match the window seat I made a few weeks ago. I fielded these on my spindle moulder.

Carcase in dry fit, the gap at the top of the top rail is for a piece of poplar so I can glue the cove moulding to the carcass.

Both carcases glued up and backs fitted.

Glued up the two pedestals to make the kneehole, the eagle eyed among you may notice a small error?

Plinth fixed on, I'm still undecided weather to make bracket feet, think I will drawer some out and see how its looks.

As always, stunning work, pure craftsmanship! [not worthy] [thumbs up]

Yeah, spotted the mistake straight away, a Dewalt router!!!

Hells teeth, man have you no shame??? [poke]

Absolutely fantastic work.....
[thumbs up]

I like working in Ash also

I really like what I see of your shop too....

should the panels in the knee space be shorter?

maybe you didn't see it hanging you head in shame from owning dewalt [tongue]

Mark,

Your cathedral grain patterns don't match on some of the panels.  They should have been either all up or all down.  Probably happened as a result of DeWalt plastic off-gassing.  I'd get rid of those tools or maybe wear a respirator.  [tongue]

Mark, stunning as always.

One word of advise.  Don't say there is a small mistake then leave everyone to guess, you will get loads of offers  ;)  I'm with Dean, should the panels bee shorter in the knee space ?

Are you concerned about the top warping & cupping ?  Its something that would concern me with boards that width.  Do you check moisture content of the wood & similar furniture in the house where it is to be situated ?  Something i might start to do, dang central heating  ;D

Cheers, yes its the panels being to long  [doh], I'm not so concerned with the grain orientation tbh.

I checked the moisture content 10% on the ash, but not any furniture in the house, its a big drafty country house so should be OK. But yes it does concern me with the timber being so wide, but I'm willing to gamble to use the wider timber which I think looks better than a load of strips.

All finished, despite being in a hurry I enjoyed making this.
