Asian-Inspired Nightstand

I recently built a small Asian inspired nightstand for a family member.  Of course, more from the big ash pile.  The top panel and drawer face are veneered with olive ash veneer.  I wanted to do something a bit different with the top.

I couldn’t find a knob I liked and didn’t want to disturb the “eye” feature of the drawer face (so pulls were out), so I busted out my lathe (a rarity) and turned a simple, and as it turns out, tiny knob to mount in the center of the eye.

Not sure how I feel about it overall until I see it in its final environment.  It is small and light with a low height to accommodate a platform bed.

Though not my liking in terms of furniture style, it definitely shows impressive and clean workmanship. Unless it's the lighting or the limitation of stock availability, I'd use the darker tone/wood for the lower side stiles as the lower front rail to match the drawer front.

It must be the camera angles or something. Sometimes the legs look like they are splayed out, sometimes not?
I don't know how to feel about the top. It looks great, but I'm not sure about the practicality of it not being flat?

Add a few ebony or dark timber accents and you've got a nice bit of Greene and Greene styled furniture!

Thank you.  The legs are splayed 4°.  It added a bit of work when cutting the rails and drawer blades to final lenghts and fitting the drawer box.  For the first time, I used a 4mm domino for the top drawer blade.  I agree with the practicality of the top, certainly a bit of a sacrifice.  But the plan is to only place a small lamp and, of course, smart phone on it.

Agreed.  Mine has taken many tumbles from the nightstand.
