I have a friend that's considering a desk build and would like to use a slab in the design. Can anyone advise on likely availability of typical desk size slabs and the probably costs for available local timbers?

thanks [smile]

What parts of Atlanta?

They just did a great Roubo build south of Atlanta in Barnesville. Bo has a great selection of wood. Depending on where your friend is located it could be a hike getting to Barnesville and make sure not to go on a race day weekend or you will regret the traffic. http://benchcrafted.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-french-oak-roubo-project.html

Suwanee Lumber if you are close to 85N has a good selection and good prices.

I personally prefer Kreg's selection of Peach State Lumber. It is up I75 and an hour from me but I find they have a much larger selection and more choices for slabs. I am partial to Peach State because they have supported the woodworking clubs, hosted Lie Nielsen events, and *poke* *poke* will hopefully host a Festool Roadshow.

There is also CAG Lumber: http://caglumber.com/. They are just north of Gainesville; I85, 575, exit 24. It is a home mill but he has an good selection of wood. All of it is air dried. Prices can be negotiable. If you call ahead you can schedule late in the evenings and on the weekends.

You can also use woodfinder.net and find folks surround the metro area. I am only posting the suppliers I have used and was satisfied with.
