Awkward filling task - help needed!

I need to fill a dead knot/split in an oak mantel over a fire, with a clear epoxy of some description. Unfortunately it cannot be removed and filling needs to be done on the vertical edge.

Any ideas of how to get the epoxy in and keep it there while it sets? Also linked to this, product suggestions?

You could mix Cabosil with the epoxy.  Cabosil is basically powdered glass and is a thickener.  West Systems offers it.  It is extremely light and fluffy and can go airborne easily so mix it in an appropriate area.  Additionally you could wait to apply the mixture until it is kicking off and self thickening.  Masking off the adjacent areas, especially below the knot would be a great idea.

Also, if it is thick enough, fill it and use Saran Wrap over it.  Another more complicated way is to make a trough of sorts with a movable "card" that is 45d off of the vertical. Then you pour enough to cover about the bottom half, the fold that card up to vertical. That should help push it into to knot. Then clamp.

Does it have to be epoxy?  Do they want to hide the know or accent it without it failing later?

If they want it filled and smoothed, I would use timbermate or something more "solid" to fill.

In the UK I'd use Repaircare resin, a 2 pack system - non slumping, easy to shape, and if necessary can be carbide scraped or sanded  - I would have thought there was an equivalent in US?  definitely tape around the area as well.
