Sitting at the hospital waiting for the arrival of my first boy.  Should be here by the end of the day today.  I'm almost finished with his crib, but thought I should make him something that he can play with or some sort of birthday toy.  Anyone have any ideas?

When my kid was a baby he loved to play and hold dominoes. Give him a couple of the 10 x 50mm or 8 x 50mm as he may try to put the smaller ones in his mouth.

Good luck!

Scott,

I don't have any great ideas but wanted to send my congratulations! Our baby Ben is now almost 6 and it gets better everyday (remember that during the 3:00A.M. feedings).

Max,

Congrats.  I know it is a ways off but wait until you become a Grandfather.  Talk about a proud, wonderful feeling.

Anyhow, I wish you and your family happiness and the best of health.

Congratulations!
While he's still a bit too young, he will certainly enjoy a nice sword, shield and various sized gun and rifle shapes.
Some building blocks are always good toy. At least they keep you entertained while you are taking care of the boy.
Despite my wife's efforts to keep these kinds of toys (guns and swords) out of the house, my son would make swords from sticks, and guns from Lego bits. I had to laugh, nature vs. nurture.

Announcing Baby Benjamin Scott!  8 pounds, 4 ounces, 21 1/2 inches tall.  (3.75 kilograms and 54.6 centimetres in Festool Land) Everyone is healthy.  I can't wait to get a saw into his hands.  My girls are good woodworkers, but it will be nice to have someone to hand the tools over to!

Wonderful news! Congratulations, and best wishes to you and your new family.

Hey there Scott.  Congrats to you and Mom!  Enjoy every minute of it--they grow up fast!

When my son was a year old, I made him a simple push around cart.  He was learning to walk and the cart gave him stability to learn to walk.

Plus he loved putting things in it and pushing it around.

I'll have to go in the attic to retrieve it (he's 24 now) but the cart was basically:

- dimensions were probably around 14" wide by 16" long.
- four wooden wheels - I think they were 2 1/2 diameter on 1" square axles under the bottom
- made from 1/2" walnut - sides were 1/2 x 3 x dimensions above
- dovetailed corners
- handle was made from maple - two arms from 1" x 3/8" x maybe 18 "
- handle attached with brass screws
- 1/2" cross dowel for the handle
- finished in wipe on oil

He would play for hours with it for his first two-three years.

Hope this gives you some inspiration.  Let me know and I can grab a photo.
