Baby jail

Our baby is just at the crawling stage now and we decided that instead of baby-proofing the house, we would house-proof the baby. I built what is really just an oversized playpen, but we call it his jail. He can wander around in there as much as he likes without feeling hemmed in.

The only saw I own is a Trion jigsaw, so I used it to rip all the wood to length, even the 70mm x 70mm corner posts. They didn't come out quite square, as you'd expect, but nothing that a touch-up with my angle grinder with sanding disc attached couldn't fix.  ;D

I rounded over all the edges with my OF 1400 and 5mm roundover bit to make it safer for baby (and for Mum and Dad when climbing in and out). The 1400 was also used to rebate the corner posts so the rails would fit flush. I would have used my Domino to attach the pickets, only i don't have one. I do, however, have an electric drill (not Festool  :'( ) and a screwdriver (Festool!), so I made do.

Dust correction was handled brilliantly by my new set Sabco dust pen and brush. No sooner had I finished sweeping up then the floor was spotless.

My wife was pleased both by the clean floor and the abundant new growing medium for her hydroponic vegetable garden.

Nice work. Who volunteers to send that kid a file baked into a cake?
Now you have to have two more kids so you can use up the full life span of that sturdy jail.
Do you really use sawdust in your hydroponic setup?

My wife is into hydroponics and she assures me that sawdust is ideal for the task as it is clean and absorbs moisture. Also it is hard to find in shops, so my amateur working and reworking of all things woody is paying big dividends for her. She has a tray of just-germinated pak choi seedlings in sawdust...I might post a pic of them. It is festool-generated sawdust after all...just to keep it on topic.  :P

There's no such thing!!!  ;)

Your jail is impressive, it looks really solid, very well done!  You should add guard towers.  And spotlights!

What kind of wood did you use?  Did you put a finish on it, or is it just the bare wood?

Festool-generated sawdust is virtually unknown here INA.  I'd say package in plastic bags and sell it -- raise a lot more money for the hydroponics and the kid!

Nice work!

Your baby jail looks like the "real forbidden city ". Magnificent work, great idea. In medical point of view, your baby jail is very good for your baby's motor development. Your baby will hold the prickets and walk around soon.

Hi,

I wish I had thought of that about twelve years ago.    Now I assume you are in the jail because of using that BLUE  dust pan and brush :o  If you stick to green and black you will avoid a lot of trouble. ;)
